It is almost always the case that teams give up more term in order to keep the AAV down but the result is usually that the last few years of the deal are hell.
Detroit is saying we'll pay you, but it has to be for only the years that we want.
I love that and I think we'll see a lot more of it going forward. (I would LOVE a short but expensive contract for Giordano)

Yeah this is the sort of deal the Flames should be offering Giordano if he wants big money. The 5+ year deal rumours for $8 million/season are nonsense.
