Who still needs a goalie at this stage? Everyone traded for one.
Smart move by Treliving.

Doesn't necessarily mean Hiller is gone. Flames might try to sneak Ortio past waivers, like the Canucks did with Markstrom.

This is good news. One-year deal serves Ramo and the Flames well.
A trade is now very possible, however Ortio should still get every opportunity to earn playing time even if both veterans are retained into Training Camp.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Karri Ramo's one-year extension with #flames is worth $3.9M.

Dreger says 3.8, not 3.9 ... doesn't matter in the end though, fantastic job by Treliving again!!!

$10M in cap space for remaining RFAs. Can't see much outside shopping done today.

No possible way this happens. Ortio was a top goalie in the AHL the last couple of years and his performance in the NHL last year with this call up garnered too much attention. If he goes on Waivers, he's gone.

Good to see Ramo back for another year - low risk move by the Flames.

Nice!!! Now to get a pick for Hiller. I like Hiller, but this is good asset management!

The high AAV explains why Ramo was willing to take a one year deal. With the goalie market dried up, I'm surprised he was able to get that much. For him, it's best to pocket a bunch of cash this year and try again next year when there may be more openings.

We needed a goalie. Would have liked to see an upgrade, but can live with this.
One year, so no problem.

maybe Treliving already has a deal for Hiller in place, but needed/wanted a replacement first. That's what I hope anyway ... nothing against Hiller, I actually like him, but I really want the Finnish goalie combo next season. Getting some assets for Hiller now would be great.

I honestly thought they were going to give Ortio a chance to at least back up this year. I know Treliving believes you can't overripen prospects in the AHL, but Ortio probably has to wonder what he has to do to be given a chance.
Of course, goalies need a LOT of time to refine their game before getting a regular job. Just look at what Ramo did early on and how long it took him to become a decent goalie. In that sense, I guess it's ok to try this for one more season and see if Ortio can take a job away from one of these two.
Whatever happens this year, I wouldn't be shocked to see one of Ramo or Hiller traded during the season since both contracts are up at the end of the year. I have a suspicion this goaltending situation is far from being settled.

This is only good if Hiller is on the way out.
