No. The Flames can easily match any offer.
If a team goes over 7.3 per year the Flames can just take the extra 1st round pick and still profit.

You don't need two 1st round draft picks in 2016. It would the first in 2016 and the 1st in 2017. Since the Avalanche picks have a good chance of being lottery picks it might be best to take the picks.

The picks have to be your own. So it would be 1st in 2016 and 2017.

As long as it's not over 8M, match.

Only an absolute moron GM would end up giving up 4 first round picks for DH when we just got him for a 1st and 2 seconds.
There's only one moron I can think of capable of such a maneuver, and he's 200k north of us. I would welcome 4 shots at a first overall if he did it.

Would Hamilton even sign an offer sheet? That seems a surefire way to alienate your new management. Everyone said all the right things after the deal, I think we'll be fine.

The only organization I would not qualify would be if the Oilers signed him and we get their 4 1st round picks. 4 top 5 picks would be pretty sweet.

Not only that but McJesus would look excellent in a Flames uniform when he hits RFA.

I think almost any player would. An extra $2 million a year is an extra $2 million per year.
That said, no team would offer sheet Hamilton at this point. The Flames aren't in cap trouble.

Hamilton will not be signing a two year deal like ROR did so (Hamilton has to agree and sign the offer sheet). Since he would be wanting term that is to the Flames advantage because any offer sheet is divided by 5 to figure out the comp (so a team can't offer 6 or 7 to lower the AAV).
Even Hamilton leaves, at worst this is assest management where a first and two 2nds were turned to two 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd or 4 1sts.

Firstly, I don't have any worries about any offer-sheets coming at Hamilton. I think the Flames sign him shortly, and even if not, the offer-sheets won't really worry the Flames too much.
If Hamilton was all about the money, signing a 2 year offer-sheet wouldn't be a horrible way to go about it. His QO henceforth would be fairly high after that, and it is definitely something a few players (like RoR) would want, even if it means giving up a bit of security.
I am really curious what he will sign for in Calgary. Heard everything from 5.5 right up through 8.

I didn't know about the divide by 5 thing. That helps us out enormously if we are aiming for a 7 year contract

The only way we lose him is if we are getting 4 x 1st's back so it's a win-win for us.

http://www.letsgobruins.net/2015/06/...six-year-deal/
Bruins offered him $5.5 and Hamilton countered with $7.5.
I think the only way this contract is under $6 million is if it's a two year bridge.
I'd guess around $7 million on a longer term contract if we are throwing out guesses.

I would like to go the full 8 years with Hamilton around $6.5M. If we do that we must be prepared for similar contracts with the likes of Johnny, Monahan, Bennett

For the record, I think Hamilton will sign tomorrow for something around 6 years, 42 M.
If a team offer sheets for 9 M, would you guys match? That is 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd. I think something like 9.1 M and above is 4 1sts.

Does signing him give us better leverage with Gio? We've a got a stud D that's ten years younger so we don't need to sign Gio to a really big deal, or do we?

Burke is still mad at the Penner offer sheet. If another one comes out of Edmonton I think he'd drive up there and start punching people

No way. Take the picks. Yes we'd lose Hamilton but we would still have good D, and we acquired a free 1st rounder. It would be too tough to manage that cap hit with Gio, Monahan, Gaudreau, Hudler, Bennett coming up.

Not worried, but I did expect a deal to be done today. I guess there is still time.
Really hoping we can get him for 7M or less for at least 7 years.
