I think Chiarelli had no scouts, and didn't trust the work the ones he fired did. Better to trade for a known quantity than to pick without knowing what you're getting.

This. There's no way I would use the Edmonton scouting staff with their track record in recent years. Trading picks for more developed players absolutely was the only thing he should have done after drafting McDavid.

Talbot played well during Lundqvist absence but that's how many games. IMHO he is just a flash in a pan. I don't think he can repeat his performance last season. Good luck Talbot...I hope you bring a lot of gloves and goal pads with you because you are going to need it.

Clearly Chiarelli thumbing his nose at the old regime. Traded virtually all the picks

Fair point. You'd think he'd have his own list from Boston's scouts, but it's really the middle to late rounds where your scouts can shine (or in Edmonton's case, don't shine).
They better hope like heck that he (i) has a decent season and shows some promise, and (ii) is willing to re-sign at the end of this season, as otherwise he could walk as a UFA at the end of 2015/16.

Good trade you can't really say otherwise. Given the state of the Oilers, trading picks for NHL caliber players is the smart move.
Having said that, I hope Talbot implodes playing behind an AHL defense and the 'high powered' offence of the Oilers.
(I laughed while typing out high powered)

I thought Talbot would get more in a trade. if he is a #1, expect a big contract soon. if not... can Connor play net?

Edmonton seems to be coming to terms with the fact that they can't draft and develop players. Might as well trade all your picks if you know you can't do anything with them.

I thinks it's more than Chiarelli canned them all and the list they prepared beforehand sucked

Interesting that Sather apparently turned down two second rounders for Talbot, then took a deal that is worse.
Definitely an improvement for Edmonton though.

Sather just misplayed the market.
The offers that included two 2nd round picks likely vanished as time progressed.
Sather overplayed his hand and got burnt.

I'm thinking most of those rumors were crap being spewed or leaked by the Rangers themselves.

Talbot is no guarantee, but he was my #1 target. I don't thin a guy like Gibson was truly available with a 2-way contract still on for next year.
I believe PC will still try to get a more proven tender this summer.

Maybe it was a bit of a favor for the Oilers so when he leaves the Rangers, he can sign on as some executive advisor role and collect a paycheck with the Oilers.

I will give Chia this much... He's made more moves in a month than bold MacTavish made in two years.

Rumours were that first rounders were being offered as well but the truth is that this was the best offer he got all weekend as Sather wins the Dale Tallon award for worst poker face at the draft. What a joke the Rangers were leaking false information the past week.
As for the Oilers it's worth the risk although this is backup #3 now in the throwing mud against the wall approach of finding a starting goaltender.

3 picks for a 27 year old career AHL backup with a few good games behind a great defense? Oilers going full-Oiler.

He probably lied, pushed misinformation out to media hacks, and tried to push price up. backups are usually worth a 2nd.

One thing that was telling to me was that some of the Rangers beat writers were questioning the initial rumoured return and how good Talbot truly was.
Oilers didn't give up a ton but wouldn't be surprised if this ends up like Fasth and Scrivens
