I wonder if some trades start off with:
These are the players you have access to.
These are my needs.
Give me a shout what you will offer or what players are available to me.
Seems more efficient to me.

from his understanding, the gm's have a "forum" where they can "post" stuff like 'looking for a second line right winger', player 'x' is available - to let the other gm's know what they are looking for and who they are willing to trade. stuff like that to get the ball rolling on discussions.
that kind of system makes sense - it beats each gm calling the other 29 every morning to see if there is anything new to chat about
i wonder if they have a funny pic thread? i bet the leafs & oil gm's wouldn't go in there very often!

This system does make a lot of sense. However, if it does exist, I think it's not utilized by every GM.
So many times after trades, you hear about how so and so GM didn't know X player was available.

Or GM's make back room deals and favors. Maybe alliances and partnerships among teams... We really don't know.

This would be unlikely to be true -- ignoring the basic bargaining advantages that come from telling different things to different teams -- several GMs have said they've been unaware certain players were on the market.
IT makes information more available in a fairer manner -- this is the opposite of what you want in adversarial bargaining situation. Most likely GM have a large phone book and do everything ad hoc over text and voice.

I 100% agree.
Why would you advertise what you want and what you are willing to give up?
You just killed all the bargaining.

You could have both. I'm sure there is a mutual BBS for the teams.

I have to think there would be a lot of mind games and plausible deniability going on. I could see them using the Assistant GM as a "minion" to "test the waters" and see if there was interest in a deal, then be able to pull back as a GM after the seed was planted. I'm sure some GMs would have better contact with others, but you'd have situations where there could be hard feelings, and have to find a "work around". Protocol would exist, but "side bar" conversation would be a staple.

sorry - i probably could have worded it better...
let's "just say" the oilers are looking for a top line d-man.... the gm goes to the board and says 'oil looking for a top line d-man'
let's say they are looking to trade hall... the gm would go on the board and say 'hall is available'
... not that they need a d-man and they want to trade hall to get a d-man
i think it's used as more of a starting point - to get the ball rolling on trades. using the above example... someone has a d-man they want to move and they see the oilers have a need, the gm's chat back and forth and a trade does/doesn't happen.
another team is interested in hall, the gm's chat back and forth and a trade does/doesn't happen.
that would be why others say, 'we didn't know that guy was available'.

I would absolutely love to be able to read such a forum.
I like to think it's like Moneyball as well though.

Moneyball took place in 2002. Anyone care to share how the business world was using Intranets, Sharepoints and Office Communicators back then?

13 years ago, there were no smart phones. Blackberry and I believe BBM were working at that time. Communication tools like ICQ and Yahoo Messenger were huge. SharePoint was not existent. Windows Messenger was part of most Windows OS builds but never used.
I know texting was big in 2002 already in Europe but I cannot recall how far spread texting or SMS'ing was in North America.

I'm sure the communication methods have changed I am just referring to the impromptu and personal deals between GMs.
Movie Draft Day did a similar thing. It could be just the best way to show it on a movie. Hanging up and saying you have to study spreed sheets for a few hours probably wouldn't be the best TV.

Oh there's definitely a lot of spreadsheets. You hear them talk about running scenarios through their models.
That's probably not the GM's job though. I wonder if they have unheralded analysts in the Flames office some where.... I'd kill for that job.

What is with the pluralization?
Perhaps you could use the Googles to research this.

They definitely have a team that's devoted to the grunt work, just like any organization does. It'd be cool for a bit but a) apparently you take a pretty serious pay cut to work for a pro sports team and b) analyzing the Flames salary cap situation would quickly change from being a fun hobby to real work with deadlines etc....I think it'd lose some of the magic. The expression 'don't #### where you eat' comes to mind for some reason, I don't think I'm using that right though haha

Jim Rutherford - "nothing, watchin the game wassup with you"
BT - "nothing watching the game"
JR - "tru tru"
BT - "WASSUP!"
JR - "WASSSUP!"
BT - "Hang on"
BT puts him on the hold and dials a number.
Doug Armstrong - "Doug Armstrong"
BT - "Wait one Doug its Brad"
BT dials in a conference line
BT - "Hey yo Jimmy pick up the line"
JR - "WASSSUPP!"
BT "UPPPPPPPPPP"

DA - "Nothin man, sittin here watching the game"
They all laugh and hang up the phone.
You hear a bing as someone joins the conference

Silence, sounds of crickets chirping
Peter - "oh" sad voice.
