I wonder how the kid is feeling leading up to the draft? It's no secret he's going first overall to the oil and they're just pathetic. Does he think he'll turn the ship around? Does he think it's too much pressure? Does he even want to go there? I wonder what he's honestly thinking...
|
I can tell you that that 99.9% of Oiler fans (and management) honestly think the 18 year old will turn the ship around and they'll be the next Pens.
They forget that the 2009 Pens in addition to Crosby (who the Oilers think McDavid is the 2nd coming of) they had: young studs Malkin, Staal, Letang, veteran leaders; Sykora, Gonchar, Guerin, Gill, a very decent supporting cast, plus MAF. Oh, and Crosby was 22 not 18 at the time.
So much delusion going on in Edm.

If the Oilers has the roster of the Winnipeg Jets all those years, the rivalry wouldn't be anything close to what it has been historically.
So bring on McDavid. I hope he wins multiple scoring titles. And I hope the Flames crush his dreams multiple times in the playoffs, preferably in the conference finals.

I'm pretty content with them sucking fumes every year, I wish them no success and I'll still go on hatting them just as strong

I 100% agree. I wonder if these same posters will be as excited about the rivalry if McDavid dumps 50 goals on us over the next decade as his team routinely beats us like a rented mule on their way to multiple championships? Not that I think that will happen, but jeez, talk about being careful what you wish for. I cannot fathom wishing for the success of a hated rival just to make the rivalry with my favorite team "more interesting". Completely mind boggling. Personally, I hope the next 10 years make the previous 10 years look like a smashing success for the Oilers.
Oh, how I hate that Edmonton won the draft lottery. I wager, we're going to have to put up with hearing more about Connor on CP over the next 10 years than 95% of the players that will actually wear the Flames jersey over that span. Just an absolutely nauseating situation.

McDavid will last a few years before he has to retire early due to concussions. The kid is going to be targeted hard.

on the plus side: 1) If he is that type of 'special' player, it'll be nice to actually get to see him. When Crosby/Ovi broke into the league we got 1 game a year vs. them if that @ the Dome. Sucked.
2) This may spark Sam Bennett to excel even faster vs. his friend McDavid
Too bad the Oil got him. But as much as I hate them I hope they don't ruin this kid, he seems decent enough. My hope at this point is that he walks away from Edmonton in a few years time to another team after showing potential, but not being enough to tip Edmonton into anything resembling a Stanley cup winning team.
Also, future Team Canada player (assuming the NHL goes to the Olympics), so there may be times when it's OK to cheer for him

You mean like Gaudreau was supposed to be? Hockey doesn't work like that

Maybe he's got some rare condition where, when he smiles he's actually sad and when he's frowning, he's really euphoric? If that's the case, then I think I get it. He was obviously hoping for Edmonton all along, because his weird, opposite reaction condition made him look like the 'happiest' kid in the world upon hearing the news.

I think his reaction when he gets drafted will be a lot more telling.

You might be a bit delusional yourself because every Edmonton fan that I know that I would actually take their opinion seriously realize he is just a piece to the puzzle, he just happens to be a very good piece.

Thanks for this. I agree.
He is going to be good, there is no doubt about that and unfortunately for us the Oilers organization is doing a 180 because of him. I think the days of the Oilers being the laughing stock of the league might be coming to an end. Not saying they are going to win the cup any time soon but they won't be getting any more 1st overall picks for a while IMO.
That was a great read, thank you for posting it OP.
I haven't really watched him play much but the small amounts that I have, you can tell he will only help any NHL team he goes to. The BOA will mean something again and I am excited about that.

He knows the Oilers are drafting him now though. He's had a couple months to get used to the idea and no doubt his agent and handlers have been telling him that to protect his image, he should at least act happy. I'm sure he'll be all smiles for the cameras now especially given how mad he appeared to be at the draft lottery. He doesn't want to come across as a pouty Lindros-esque prima donna, which is what will be talked about if he looks like he's angry and disappointed again. He no doubt wants to put all the speculation behind him as he knows he has no choice but to play in Edmonton other than by doing something that he already said he wouldn't do.
The spin on the reaction is hilarious though, I'll give them that.
April 2015. Shocked and horrified to hear the Oilers have won the lottery and will 100% be drafting him.
June 2015. Smiles and happy to hear the Oilers have drafted him.
But it's just his personality, it's just who he is...
Yeah right, I can see why they didn't want to admit the truth but 'it's his personality' is just a hilarious load of BS. He was clearly devastated to hear the news when it happened, nothing that comes after will convince me otherwise. It was plainly obvious for all to see.

Gaudreau is much tougher to hit and is not heralded as the 'next great one'. He will get the treatment Crosby gets and will be keyed in on every game. Gaudreau was keyed in on but later in the season and we all saw how many bad hits from behind he took in the playoffs. That's exactly how hockey works. You target the top players on each team.

I can tell you what it's like to hate Edmonton though and hate them enough that it can't possible be contained in one thread

Yes. On each team, for every team. McDavid will get the same treatment as Kane, Stamkos, etc, etc. Kinda silly to suggest he'll get targeted more than any other star

Crosby gets keyed on because he is the best player in the game. McDavid wouldn't get that treatment until it was warrented.... Exactly how you described Gaudreau.

What's more annoying is how these generational talents are gifted to Edmonton on a silver platter. I don't think any team in pro sports is as dumb and lucky as the Oilers. Yes, I'm quite jealous of their dumb luck.

To be fair, this is the only generational talent gifted to the Oilers. Gretzky came into the league because of wacky business shenanigans.
The Pens are the ones with horseshoes up their bums. First Lemieux and then Crosby, with Jagr grabbed in between for good measure.

I do hope he is better than Crosby as the term goes. It will only revive the battle of Alberta and make the Flames even better.
