That's a little disappointing to hear actually. Not that it totally ruins the players tribune idea, but knowing they basically just go in and give an interview (albeit a good, in depth interview) kind of cheapens it a bit.
I thought it was a really cool idea to have players go in and actually write an interesting candid story. Oh well, it's still neat to get candid interviews from them.

^ my guess would be that anything from most players mins to the pen would not make a lot of sense.
Not saying they don't have interesting stories, just saying they would likely not be overly articulate

I didn't really find the article all that groundbreaking, or change my opinion of Avery at all. It seemed in a weird way like he still was struggling with the change from super rich guy to normal guy, and I don't know what it is but the comments just seemed like life was horrible after leaving the NHL, which is not really what I think he was trying to say, just that is how I interpreted it. He still seems incredibly arrogant.
I guess I probably have too high expectations maybe.

ya I dont mind it that much, the writing is quality and they have final sign off so it's still their words, just with better prose than if it was written by themselves

He was pointing out that the transition is tough for all players. Not only has their whole life routine been pulled out from under them, but all the stuff they take for granted - the hotels and restaurants and jets and everything handled by someone else - is gone. Now they have to pay for everything themselves, and plan it themselves, and unless they were a superstar, they need to start thinking about some kind of business or job. Talking about that stuff openly isn't being arrogant.

I got the same vibe.
This is his second article on this player's tribune. Why does he keep contributing, he's been out of the game for years.
The reason he retired was less romantic and nuanced than his narrative.
He got demoted to the ECHL and quit. He "threw his skates into the Hudson River" - his words.
