C'mon people, you have a cross between Peter Forsberg, Erik Karlsson, and Chewbacca!

JFK all the way!

Curious -- if the Flames pick two defencemen at 52 and 53, does that put undue pressure on them to compete against each other? Does the guy picked at 53 play with a chip on his shoulder because he was "second" to the guy picked at 52? Or does it become that much more awesome when both guys make it and end up playing on the same pairing for the next 15 years?!?

Well, it would be awesome if they're practically the same player with a different face, like Brett Kulak and Ryan Culkin 2.0.

In the last 15 drafts (since 2000) the Flames have drafted 31 d-men.

There are 6 that have more than 20 NHL games.... Phanuef, Pardy, Foster Brodie, Aulie and Erixon.

Take out the 6 drafted in the last 2 drafts.... that leaves 25.

Take out the 1st round picks.. Phanuef, Erixon and Pelech and we have 22.

4 out of 22 of defense-men drafted by the Flames past the first round since 2000 have made it the NHL.

Rockets d-men drafted

#49 2003 Weber
#241 2004 Mike Card 4 NHL games
#222 2005 Kyle Cumisky 128 NHL games
#5 2008 Luke Schenn
#10 2008 Tyler Myers
#85 2008 Brandon MacMillan 171 NHL games (played D 50% of the time with the rockets)
#64 2009 Tyson Barrie
#60 2012 Damon Severson 51 NHL games
#53 2013 Madison Bowey
#139 2013 Mitch Wheaton.... missed last season due to shoulder surgeries.

So 10 Rocket d-men drafted since 2003 ..only one guy picked #241 ruled out as Not NHL material.. Also Wheaton looks to be a long shot due to injuries.

Take out the 2 1st round picks and 2 drafted in the last 2 years and 6 out of 6 made to the NHL and 5/6 will make the 100 game mark. Severson only had 51 in his rookie year as a 20 year old.

Not counting guys that got their finishing in Kelowna ... Duncan Keith and Josh Morrissey.

I really like the odds of Devante Stephens making it to the NHL just based on him developing in Kelowna. This is not be a big secret and some other GM will pick him up well before his central scouting ranking.

The interchangeability of two guys gave me fits. For the longest time I mistook their names as Brett Culkin and Ryan Kulak.

I think whoever gets picked at 53 will be thrilled and won't care who was picked at 52.

Surprised you even thought of this. Kind of odd to me.

Don't think Hank was ever under undue pressure since Daniel was picked before him.

And how many Kelowna D-men didn't spend significant time in the NHL after playing in the dub? You make it sound like because a guy played for the Rockets, he's a sure fire NHL'er...

Please explain to me the infatuation with Stephens... Honestly, he's 161 lbs and put up 11 points in 64 games, followed by 4 points in 11 playoff games...

I'm just not understanding the hype.

FWIW, he looks like a decent prospect.

For a 5th rounder.

.
2 that were drafted out of 10.

A Kelowna D-man who is drafted have consistently been much better than most d-men taken ahead of them..... especially after the first round.

So it is the mere fact that they were drafted and played in Kelowna makes them a good choice? Solid logic.

Ok awesome. And how many went undrafted?

FWIW, I'm not opposed to taking a flyer on Stephens, but absolutely not in the third round.

Looks like Matt Spencer (D) is the clear winner for pick 52, but too close to call for pick #53.

I'm going to create a run-off poll for 53 with Dermott and JFK as the only choices and let them battle it out for the final Flames 2nd rounder.
