Some analysis from Darren Haynes why the Flames are looking at goalies

Quote:
From what we've seen and heard so far from GM Brad Treliving, his modus operandi is to be patient with how quickly prospects will ascend to the NHL. As the mantra goes, no roster spots in Calgary will be given, they'll have to be earned. If a player comes in and forces their way onto the roster sooner than anticipated, then that's one of those 'good problems' that GMs love to have.

On that note, if you take a cautious approach with Gilles, one should not expect his arrival in the NHL before 2018-19. That gives him three seasons in the minors, which has pretty much been the norm for goalies out of college.

That means not only does Calgary need a goalie to pair up with Ortio in 2016-17, but also for 2017-18. I wouldn't be looking for a straight back-up either. You have to count on him being the starter and leave it up to Ortio to wrestle away the No. 1 job from him.

If we acquire Lehner, and keep Hiller, Can either Lehner or Ortio go back to the AHL without waivers? Or would we be forced to run with 3 tenders with the big club until Treliving finds a home for the odd man out?

Ortio and Lehner are both on one way contracts and would need to clear waivers. I think the angle here is to see which one of these same aged goalies will emerge victorious as a #1.

Either way, it seems like The Flames are going to be walking into next year without Ramo and maybe Hiller.

Why not try to re-sign Ramo? You could trade Hiller for an asset and have Ramo signed for 3 or 4 years to be Ortio's partner. That or you could extend Hiller after this season.

Lehner has never really impressed me in the NHL. He's young and has loads of potential, but he's not the 'veteran presence' that the team needs right now. If he comes cheap then there's little risk. Someone suggested Mason Raymond? By all means, make it happen. Much more than that? :blurgh:

The idea seems to be Ramo is going to want more term and more dollars than the Flames are willing to spend.

I think term is the key. He's not going to want a 2 year deal.

Only room for one 6'5 goalie here, and his name is Jon Gillies!

If we can net more trading away Hiller than it would cost to acquire Lehner (i.e. be net asset positive) then I am all for it. I've got no problem cycling through the commoditized tier of NHL goalies at this stage in the rebuild.

I would be pretty surprised if Ramo got a big salary and long term on the open market. While I do like his style he still has a long way to go to prove he's a legit everyday starter in this league.

I'd say, at best, he's earned the deal Hiller signed with us last year.

I don't think it's a huge risk. They miss the POs? That actually doesn't concern me too much, since I figured they'd miss until the year after this in the RB.

I think it's too high a reported price though.

Perhaps thus was a leak aimed at Ramo's agent.

15/16 would be a great year to be a bubble team for the draft. I'd love the Flames to get Sean Day.

Anywho, I'm all for adding Lehner. Won't complain one bit if it happens. Just means they think more of Ortio thn I would have thought.

honestly Treliving 'kicking the tires' is just him doing his due diligence. He always has come across as the kind to evaluate every combination and permutation of potential moves to see what would result in the largest benefit.

Wow Elliot Friedman must be trying to suck up with Flames for throwing all the rumours lately. He wants to see how much are we (Flames fans) interested. What's next? Lehner is too rich for the Flames. A player in a top 6 and a draft pick? Maybe the Flames should spread a rumour that Mason Raymond is now the startIng LW for Monahan's line.

A part of me thinks this is more about prying him away from Edmonton than it is anything else...

That and I don't think brass has as much confidence in Hiller without Ramo pressing on him.

As for Ortio I gather they want him to fight for a spot as well worst case he gets playing time in the A.

Only if that top 6 player is somehow stretched to include a David Jones, and the pick is a 2nd or 3rd rounder. And at the same time we have a deal for Hiller in place.
Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me, but I would be on board for the right price.

BT does not walk away. BT counter-offers!

Mason Raymond + WSH 3rd

If the trade worked out like this

To Calgary

Robin Lehner
31st overall pick

To Buffalo

Jonas Hiller
Max Reinhart

To Ottawa

Mason Raymond
Kenny Agostino

Then that may work

So Ottawa gives him up for nothing?
Cause that's what those 2 assets are worth.

Raymond and Agostino have minimal value at best. Think next to nothing.
