I went to Edmonton for an Oilers game a couple years back, and like an idiot I stayed at the piece of junk across the street called "The Coliseum". I got home to Calgary, went to take a shower and noticed about 300 bite marks down my back, legs, and butt. I was livid. I called and complained and fought with them and they denied any wrong doing, but eventually offered me 20% off my next stay haha. I obviously told them to shove it.
As far as remedies go, I went to the doctor and he told me to grab some Milk of Magnesia. Apply it in the shower, it burns like hell, but you'll be good within a week.
Also, make sure not to touch your junk after applying it to your infected areas because that is the worst pain I've ever felt and it doesn't go away for 10-15 mins. Hope this helps!

Edmonton is no good.

The most important thing is to kill the eggs. I believe steam is the most effective way to deal with those. I'd probably have to burn my house down since there's no way my wife would ever sleep in it again if we got them.

Yeah I also check every hotel I check into as well.

One thing that worries me is I will pick one off an airplane seat on a long flight.

edit: Also if you buy new or used furniture always check them for signs or eggs before bringing it inside your house. I know a few warehouses in the US for new furniture have been infested.

Not discrediting your belief that they may be bedbugs, but we just had a potential bed bug issue here in my house, had n exterminator come in and said they were carpet beetles.

So maybe they're carpet beetles?

Not a chance would I be keeping the bed after that. A friend of mine had them and ended up replacing half his furniture.

As far as natural remedies go, isn't the big part of why there's such a recent spread of them is the chemicals that were used were banned, and more natural/organic/weaker chemical methods had to be used? Read up on it quite a bit before I went to New York, and that seemed to be the general consensus. I'd be leery of trying to tackle it myself with drug store remedies personally.

Good habit to get into. Something I've started doing a few years back.
They used to spray massive areas, including whole cities, with DDT. This pretty much stopped the bed bugs from spreading. No more DDT and the bed bugs have been crawling forward ever since.

I had bedbugs here about 10 years ago. I bought 6 flea collars used for dogs and placed them under cushions and mattresses ... the buggers were gone real quick.
