Why is this being twisted to be a self driving car fail? Even Codynw can realize that this was a driver/human error.
The car was not self driving. It was driven by a human. It didn't have any self-driving technology.

Self driving cars are how the survivors will be delivered to Skynet/the machines in the Matrix.

What that statistics about the Google self driving cars? They've been in x amount of accidents, all due to human error and not the cars themselves?

At one time, people checked their fuel with their eye balls, by opening the cap and looking inside. There were many changes along the way before we came to something accurate. And now, "I don't need to pay attention to my fuel anymore, car dings and sends me a light when it's low!"
At one time, people needed to use their full strength to turn the axel of a car, then came power steering, and it's magical forces allowed us to turn the car wheels with ease.
At one time, cars ran on this mystical substance called Gasoline. Now they run on electricity, biofuels or even water!
Self-reliant cars are coming. The technology leading up to what eventually works won't be fuel proof. This guy's problem wasn't that he relied on it, it was that he thought he had it, but didn't. Eventually, no we won't have to pay attention, just like I can read a book while riding the train.

Self-driving cars will be great for the 90% of people who don't give a crap about driving and just want to go from A to B in their appliance. The other 10% of us who actually enjoy the experience of driving hope the process of getting there drags out for many decades.
I get the evolution towards self-driven cars, and things being down for you by computers in general. However, I think there's something really satisfying about doing things for yourself…whether it's cooking a nice meal instead of out of a box, fixing something instead of calling a guy, operating a manual photo lens instead of picking filters on your phone, or yes, even driving a car.
We're slowly being turned into heads floating in a jar.

So it seems the general consensus in this thread is people are welcoming self driving cars? I like to drive. I want to drive. I don't want the car driving for me. I think the technology is getting annoyingly silly. Front collision warning, blind spot warning, cars braking for you. Basically we're creating a fresh batch of drivers that don't have to pay attention and can text until they hear a beep.
Bah. Maybe self driving cars will save us all.
Nevermind.

Will regular cars be eliminated once self driving ones come into effect?
These are all great examples but all can still be done if one really wants to. I can have a delicious pasta meal with the ready made stuff from the store, or I can go all out and do it myself if I'm really in the mood. The technology might make the pure act harder to get to put it won't eliminate it.

The technology isn't creating that, it's a response to that.

The response should be taking away driving privileges. Not making it easier for dummies to drive without paying attention.

My issue with the self driving technology isn't the technology itself. It's that people will change their driving habits because of it (not everyone of course, but lots of people absolutely will). They won't pay as much attention, and if the sensors fail, they won't be ready for it. If it was an emergency backup type thing and everyone still paid attention to the road? Awesome. But that's not how it will end up. You're foolish if you think otherwise.
And yes, I genuinely enjoy driving. Even if they perfect self driving cars, I don't want one. Driving a car is fun.

I'll tell you what, I'm sick and tired of congestion on my commute, and if self-driving cars can eliminate that I'll be all for it in a heartbeat.

This x 10000.
I love driving. It will be a sad day when I can no longer enjoy my car outside of some stupid track.

Yeah but, good luck. Creating an entire technology around a car that drives it self is probably easier then correcting a bunch of dumb humans.

I would imagine at some point. Hopefully they at least grandfather them in so I can drive my car for life if I so choose. I don't care if other people don't want to drive, but there are many of us that still do (but I'm also one of those crotchety types that think that if your car is an automatic, you're not really driving anyway).

Well, thankfully as I near 50, I'm pretty sure I won't be around when they mandate all cars be self driving so hopefully I'll get to drive and run people down at will until I can't drive anymore.

Then support buses, trains, and yes…even bike paths. A self-driving car with 1 passenger inside still takes up quite a bit of real estate, no matter who's in control.
