I'm so happy to live in a climate where crap like that is relatively rare. There are places in the world where that thing would be seventy times that size, and the call you'd get would probably be from it instead after it digested your wife.

It a Type of Katydid. Not really a cricket, nor are they all Mormon, some Catholics. If you note the back legs they are not specialized for jumping like a grasshoppers.
