It is so difficult to gauge a player using just stats. If they do sign him, we won't know what he is really until he starts playing with our team. He might have just been used in non offensive situations, or he might just be a black hole on offense. At worst he would be a decent leader type guy in Stockton.

People need some context - he had 15 points in 50 games last year with TPS Turku, which was second on the team amongst defensemen. The leading scorer on the team had 36 points in 43 games.

Friedman on 960 says a few teams were interested on him and Calgary has a good chance of landing him.
Doesn't put up much points but can defend. Has a good shot but not sure if he uses it a lot.
Would be a good fit for the Flames.

In lack of offensive prowess - yeah, but Smid can't defend all that well.

He seems like exactly what this team needs. A big bodied guy to handle some of the large centres that give the Flames so much trouble. It would be great if he signs with the Flames and even better if he develops into a good player.

I actually think Cervenka had pretty decent production (39gp/9g/8a/17pts) considering his health issues at the start of the season, family issues (I believe he had a newborn across the world), and the somewhat diminished role he was given on the team. He was basically on pace for 20 goals...which is nowhere as terrible as people make it out to be.
I think it's a shame he cut bait and ran back to the KHL. He should've given the NHL another year...even if it wasn't with the Flames.

Yeah, I wasn't as down on Cervenka as a first year NHLer as some were. I'd have maybe given him another full year.
A point more than Bouma? That's pretty good for an experimental guy. Of course, he didn't bring the other facets that Bouma brings, but even if he was just a 20 goal guy, without much defence or grit, that's Mason Raymond at bargain prices.

As far as KHL etc. Dmen being signed by NHL teams, it's not unprecedented for it to work out. Emelin is a guy that comes to mind.
Also, last year the OIlers signed a guy named Anton Belov, and Oilers fans really liked what he brought to the table:
Quote:
The guys a stud. I didn't even know how good he was until i watched him live and couldn't help but notice his patience with the puck and body positioning. His rocket of a shot is much needed on the PP units and his shot blocking fiestiness is great for the PK.
Face it guys, if he continues this into the regular season he'll be playing top 4 minutes with Petry sliding down to the 5-6 role. Book it.
|
Quote:
Second game in the row the guy has the most TOI on Oilers (23.13 vs Chicago) and he was 0 on 5-1 loss. And it's his 23rd game in NHL.
|
Quote:
He has been outstanding, completely outplayed Smid and made him expendable. Hopefully he resigns for ~3M.
|
Quote:
This was a very under rated signing done by MacT. So far he looks great out there.
|
Quote:
He needs to shoot more, especially on the PP. He has a great shot.
|
So of course MacTavish / Eakins ruined his NHL career, but seems more like a case of Dubnyk/Petry syndrome than anything else so he bounced back to the motherland. I dunno where Nakladal's talent compares to Belov, but it is an instance of a KHL guy being NHL calibre, even if that's a #4/#5D which is all we really want from this guy anyways.

Their standards for defencemen are pretty low.

Worked out fine for Belov. He is the highest paid defenceman in the KHL.

Need a D-man that scares the hell out of the oppositions coming into the defensive zone. Don't need more Schlemko, Wideman, Diaz, Russell or Smid type where the d-man plays small and can't play the body. 6'4"+, 250lb+, speed - good.

Smid played the body plenty, he was just slow and couldn't do anything with the puck

They tried out Douglas Murray. OK, his speed was never good, but he meet the other two.

List of NHL defencemen 6'4+, 250+:
Byfuglien
Chara
As if those physical attributes aren't rare enough, you have to find a guy that big and with speed? What are the Flames waiting for?!
