Trade Raymond. I dont care who we get as long as we drop salary.

I think I am pretty happy with this team but I wouldn't mind adding a defenseman who can be #5 but can play with the top 4 once in awhile. For forwrards, it is more like elimination. I really hope Mason Raymond gets traded next season. With Ferland and Bennett going to be a full-time Flames next season, Raymond will not have a spot in the lineup. I would rather see Jooris and Granlund in the lineup. Paul Byron is capable of taking Raymond spot too. He is as fast and can play two way hockey.

Raymond had an alright run with his hometown team. It's over though. Good luck always, Mason.

Sign Beleskey if only so he doesn't become a Flame killer for the next half decade.

Anyways, a second line that can be counterd on offense more often than not. Players that can play, and score on a 2nd line PP. Bennett will be there eventually, but maybe not next year yet. Two, maybe three guys if can swing it.
The second line PP was atrocious down the the strech.
...
As rosy and as awesome as many have played, hopefully Burke and Treliving make some tough calls....Sutter moving on from 2nd leading playoff scorer and fan favourite in Conroy was huge after June 2004.
|
Agreed, the second PP unit was very weak
Moving Conroy was a salary decision (2.5 or whatever was steep then) as I recall. But the team signed a bunch of over priced veteran crap like Amonte, Nolan, Bertuzzi over the years. Misallocation of dollars, filling in gaps in the wrong spaces.
This year's team is built a lot better based on what it takes to succeed in the current incarnation of the game. It didn't include a good enough PP2 but just may have snuck up on some folks

Its clear after watching the ducks (or past cup winners) we need bigger skilled centers who can win draws. Monohan is one, we need at least a legit upgrade on backlund to get to the next level.

Trade with St. Louis and Chicago to acquire: Oshie, Berglund, and Sharp.
(No idea what to give up.... bear with me, maybe Backlund + Colborne + 1st? a bit much? hate giving up the first. We could probably get Sharp easier because of the Hawks cap situation..)
Sign 2 of these D-men in Free Agency(most likely one though) like: Green, McQuaid, Franson, Jackman, Michalek.
And sign Joel Ward in Free Agency.
Line-up
Johnny Gaudreau - Sean Monahan - Jiri Hudler
Patrick Sharp - Patrik Berglund - T.J. Oshie
Lance Bouma - Sam Bennett - Joel Ward
Michael Ferland - Matt Stajan - David Jones
xDrew Shore, Josh Jooris, Brandon Bollig
Mark Giordano - T.J. Brodie
Kris Russell - Dennis Wideman
Adam McQuaid - Franson/Green/Jackman/Michalek
xDeryk Engelland
Karri Ramo
Joni Ortio

A guy that looks appealing to me is Drew Stafford. 6'2", 215lb right-handed right winger. Years removed from a 30 goal season so his price tag should be reasonable, but put up 19 points in 26 games in Winnipeg. I feel he could slide up and down the right side, from 1st to 3rd lines.

Going forward:
-Don't get away from the hardworking identity in favour of acquiring "skill". This is what the post lockout Flames did and was a big reason for their eventual downfall.
-Don't jam up the payroll with overpaid/underperforming contracts. Don't sign "loyalty contracts" to guys not deserving of them.
This means try not to recreate the Mason Raymond mistake going forward (I can give management a bit of a pass here as they needed to hit the floor capwise but did we really need to go three years?). Non-essential role players like himself should not be eating up valuable capspace and term (in the future) like he does.
This also means don't sign a guy like Jiri Hudler to an unnecessarily long contract where he will hinder the team down the road. I would go two years. In exchange, pay him handsomely. Jiri is a top 6 or bust type of player whose production will likely fall of a cliff when father time catches up with him. Don't get stuck with multiple years still owing to him when that time comes.
Gio is someone you would have leeway with regards to a longer contract.
-Limit the roster overhaul this offseason. That was a tight, hardworking lockerroom, don't mess with the chemistry too much while the core is growing. The same roster could easily be much improved next year just through pure on-ice/physical development. With that said, if the opportunity comes up to add a proven winner with good size and attitude (Justin Williams) I wouldn't hesitate to do so provided he doesn't want silly term.
-One role player I would like to have a long look at is Jay Beagle from Wash. Calgary kid, 29 yrs old, 56% in the dot, 10 goals this year and is a healthy 6'3, 215. If he's ready to come home he could be a great addition. Known for his faceoff prowess, PK ability and work ethic. There's always room for more of that.

1. Get a top 6 forward. Ward, Williams, O'Reilly, Sharp, Jordan Staal, Oshie. We need more secondary scoring.
2. If a cheap top 4 defence-man comes than great, if not move on. Don't do to much, don't waste your cap space. We don't need quantity to just take spots away from young guys. We are in a great spot

1) Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler never win the Stanley cup again. Or ever in Kesler's case.

Rebuild is over. We have the young core that we need to win, it's now just a matter of surrounding them with good players that can take us to the next level and become a contender. No more adding bottom 6 forwards, we have plenty of those in my mind.
What I want is a top 6 forward of some sort to help us with secondary scoring. Hopefully someone with size. I like the idea of Jordan staal, although his numbers have fell off the last couple of seasons. Still, if we can get him for cheap, he might be an absolute steal if Hartley can work his magic on him.
Another top 4 defenceman, which means to me one of Russell or Wideman are gone. Honestly I like both a lot, but tough decisions need to be made and in my mind, we need to get bigger and meaner on defence. I'm sure one of those guys can command quite a decent return in a trade.
Better goaltending. I don't care who we decide to keep between Ramo and Hiller, I'm just not convinced either of them is starter material.

Top 4 D man is my first priority "Seabrook"
Then it's all about the draft. May not be popular, but I'd be looking at trading up to get a quality D man with the 1st pick "Provorov" would be amazing.
Then I'd like to see the shovel hit the dirt on the new Areana!!!!
Not much to ask

Patience. Cold evaluation of what we have and what we need. No knee-jerks.
The rebuild is NOT finished, it has just gotten to an unexpectedly good start. There's still lots of young players coming in, and the ones on the team should have a lot of room for improvement. Who finds consistency? Can Ferland find that intensity regurarly? Will Colborne ever find the right balance for his physical play? Is Ortio ready to become a starter? Lots and lots of questions.
Next season should still be a lot about player evaluation and development, the way this season was. I will not be shocked if we end up in the playoffs again and maybe even go further, but I will also not be shocked if we will be left out out of the dance. The west is crazy competitive, good teams are left out each year.
I want the management to look at the situation calmly, not fall too much in love with the little team that could, but also not get shortsighted and try to force this team into a contender. If there's a good player to be had out there, get him, but don't force it and overpay.

Trade with the Hawks for Seabrook and Sharp. Bring up Ortio as a 1B goalie. I'd say trade Raymond but if we make any other trades, we'd probably need him to fill the spot of whomever we trade. Trade with the Devils for Gelinas or with the Coyotes for Gormley.
It would be hard to do any of those things let alone all of them but I think any of them are possibilities and would help this team moving forward.
Oh ya, extend Hartley, Gio, Hudler, Johnny, Monahan, Colborne (unless he's traded), Backlund(unless he's traded), Bouma, Jooris(unless he's traded) and Russell. These guys call all be extended after July 1st so get it done asap.
And fix the jersey. Bring back the classic Flames jersey and get rid of the black logo.
