I do t see how the city cn just move the Red Mile? If the Flames win tonight it is going to be pretty crazy I think with it being Saturday, potential second round on the line, and the game being at home.
I was at the Red Mile all the time in 2004 and checked it out after game 4. I have much less desire to go down there as a 31 year old than a 20 year old that is for sure. So far it has been fairly tame from what I see just a lot of chants and high fives. The only thing I really dislike compared to 04 is half of the people filming everything on their phones to post on YouTube 5 minutes later.
The beauty of having a family friendly zone is that you can put it any where.
So just put it far away from 17th. Problem solved.
17th is what it is BECAUSE of us drunks leaving the bar and piling into the street. I 2nd (or 4th I guess) the stupidity of beer gardens but I think people like OP are exactly why they exist. Drinking = The Devil. The existence of beer gardens just makes it worse too because you're forced to get your entire alcohol fix in one go or you're waiting in line again to get back in.
The worst part is that it seems to be getting more strict as opposed to more liberal.
I was 10 when the Flames won the cup. My Mom painted my face, packed my Sisters and I into the old Caprice and off we went to Electric Ave to join the party. There were tens of thousands of people in the middle of the street and people were driving slowly down the middle of Eleventh Ave. I was on the hood of my car yelling we're number one and GFG as my mom burnt out the horn from honking so much. Once we finished the stretch of the party, I got back into the car and we headed home. What a great experience.
My mom says she never worried one bit about someone grabbing me, me being exposed to something I shouldn't be seeing as a ten year old or worried about my safety at all.
We still talk about it to this day and we have compared '89 to '04 and one thing my sisters always bring up is that yeah, the guys nowadays are much dirtier and much less sensored than in '89 but yet so are the girls.
Society has changed. There is no such thing as pg13 anymore. Everything is subjective..
Case in point, some Disney kids flicks can get pretty dirty but only adults get the jokes.
Today we are much less desensitized, we are exposed to so much more violence and sexuality than ever before. A major player is social media and the ability to watch others conduct acts of violence and be bit over the top when it comes to sexuality of any gender.
How do we change that? Figure that out, and that's how we change the red mile.
So... Don't count on it anytime soon.

I didn't see anything on 17th when I went on Tuesday that I wouldn't want my 12 year old sister to see. Maybe swearing but 12 year olds swear these days regardless.
I know the media is saying otherwise but from my first hand experience there was nothing.
That being said, no way I'd trust that to be the case every time so I'd never actually do it. Actually with the internet being so widespread I'm sure they see a lot worse than the red mile anyways.

Drinking does not equal the devil. I never said that. I'm not opposed to drinking. At this point its almost as though the celebration of a win becomes secondary to the drunken party aspect.

Party responsibly. Not that difficult.
Okay that's fair but you are talking about the 18-35 crowd...
In 2004 I lived 2 blocks from the red mile. It was definitely PG-13 most of the time. It was awesome. Lots of kids on their Dads' shoulders, waving flags and high fiving everybody. Seniors in the neighborhood came out and celebrated. It was something to be proud of. It was very much like stampede week. First thing in the morning the streets are clean and we were back to normal.
Now, at 1am and 2 am it was more rowdy, particularly in one stretch of 17th ave, in front of melrose. But at that time of night you would expect that. Most people would go home after an hour of celebrating, except the die hard party people or the bar crowds heading home. That was adult time, and for some people that was awesome in its own rowdy way. But let's not be so dumb to think the whole thing was about that. It was way better than that.
1 hour before puck drop - that is a great time to bring your kids. Honk horns, wave flags. Everybody is excited about the game. Totally festive atmosphere. I remember the Saturday, game 6 against Tampa Bay, it was like a 6 hour parade. I sat and watched all afternoon and it was great for anyone who saw it.
After an afternoon game or eastern time zone game - definitely kid friendly for quite awhile. I wouldn't hesitate to take my kids at that time.
After an 8 pm game (over at 11pm), you'd be fine for one trip down the red mile and back without any trouble before you put kids to bed. Just like the saddledome concourse after a big win. A few drunks and a few swear words but no different than the dome. Mostly just awesome.
Then you go home and the let the college kids have their fun, and the police will do their job as needed.
EDIT - The crazier stuff always took a couple hours to build up anyway. It's not like people just instantly went crazy at the end of the game and started flashing and groping eachother at 10pm, all the while chanting "Go Flames Go".
