As the parent of 11 yr old and 9 yr old, land line is needed.

Once they get their own phones (cell) then yip I will be cutting the cord.

Sadly, untill then.

Also, AcGold don't you ever change.

Really? I have some family with an alarm and cell only. Doesn't seem to be an issue.

I still have a landline with Shaw that costs me $17 a month in order to get the triple play discount (internet/tv/phone) of $25 a month.

I'm on a pretty good deal with Shaw so I'm always hesitant to call and rock the boat, but I never use or answer the landline anymore. I always assumed cancelling the landline would end up costing me more (at least $8 a month more). Hell I think I remember a CSR telling me that at one point...

Any of you guys have a similar experience?

No land line here for about 10 years.
I've been meaning t buy a phone to plug into the land line, in case the kids need to dial 911, but can't think of a reason to actually have a working one.

I have a magicjack and cell phone (Wind). Both work well for my use.

Unfortunately
There are numerous home security monitoring solutions available now that will do this over the internet (broadband monitoring).

To be honest, I'm actually surprised that 4 in 5 households still have a landline.
Yeah, pretty soon only senior citizens are going to have one. I haven't had one at home since 2010. I can't imagine why I would need one if I also have to have a cell phone.

Only reason we have a landline is for my wife's business. Otherwise it would be gone. None of my friends have landlines that I know of.

I will look into this. At the time I last checked, it would have cost me over $100 per year (above land line cost plus monitoring) for wireless service, as well as the $300 up front equipment cost - so keeping home phone was a fair bit cheaper. Thanks

That's why I still have a land line. I called my alarm company and they said they could put in a box that would allow the system to dial out without a land line but it was around $400 plus an extra monthly fee.
