Him back for the Flames aside the suspension is not nearly long enough...this league is going to have their asses handed to them in a lawsuit in the next 5-10 years
4 regular season games for a hit that easily could have ended a career...Buff was so worried about it he gave another guy a head shot at the end of the game
any future lawsuit
League "we are serious about preventing head....blah blah, steps this"
then the prosecutor shows that video in super slow mo and says the guy got 4 regular season games and no penalty during the game

glad he's back for the Flames game - after we kick their arses, I don't want Jet fans whining that it would have been different with Buff in the lineup.

Explanations are clear but the reasoning remains sluggish. Injury should be an aggravating factor for issuing punishment, not the determining factor. This hit could have been a career-ending and life-altering injury caused not by unfortunate accident but by intention to injure.

Correct me if I am wrong. Is 4 games not the max for a phone hearing? And 5 the minimum for in person?

I think it was Craig Button and the other guy(can't remember) mentioned last night that they think Byfuglien will only get less than 5 games suspension. They said that usually happens when a player doesn't have to meet Safety in person. I don't think they agree that he will only get less than 5 games though.

Not just brutal, but pointless and stupid. Dunno what he was thinking.
I agree the suspension should be a bit longer. And I'm not just saying this from a homer Flames perspective. I like Dustin (though a bit less now) and have come around on the Jets this season based on their play. Rest of the season plus 2 in the playoffs would have been a good message to him I think. Don't worry about adding the games next season if they don't make the playoffs.

I still think they make the playoffs and the kings don't. When the flames win tonight, it will make it difficult for the kings to catch them IMO since the flames will beat Arizona and Edmonton. Even if we lose to the kings, we can still get in.
So lets hope the jets get in and we can keep the kings out as well by beating them. Maybe we make the playoffs by winning the next 3 games and then beat the kings, who are tied with the jets on the last day of the season when we lose to the jets in their barn and they eliminate the kings. That is what I would like to see.
Come on Coilers tonight, make it happen.

He put on his weight into it and dropped his stick into his neck.
This is Byfuglien weight and not Paul Byron.
That could've killed him, 4 games is a joke.

I assume if they offer in person but the player opts for phone, it still can be 6 or more?
I think they can do less than 6 in an in-person, if they are so moved. That would be the point of the hearing, yes?

I believe in the Jays.
|
Yeah... I'll put on a tinfoil hat for that.
Hey Buff, we're gonna suspend for all the games remaining... except the one that probably has the biggest playoff implications for your team, you can be nice and rested for that one.

yes to both questions obviously, but the NHL only offers an in person hearing when they are considering 6 or more games as punishment

I believe the in person hearing is required in order to give six games or more. The NHL can still give a reduced, or even zero games, but they don't have to give six games or more simply because the player is in person.
As stated earlier, a player can waive his right to an in person hearing, do it over the phone, and still receive six or more games.

And an "in person" hearing doesn't necessarily guarantee a long suspension, it just allows them to go over 5 if they decide to.
The most recent example is Dmitry Kulikov. In February, he was offered an in person hearing for clipping Seguin, and he only received a 4 game suspension.

Cheap shot, and stupid play. Deserved what he got, and would have been way more if Miller was hurt.
Hopefully this means Winnipeg falls out of it, making things easier for us!
Winnipeg has a tough schedule, and the Kings do not (they play edmonton twice).
I think Winnipeg is the odd team out in the playoff race, thank you Dustin.

I wish the league really was serious about eliminating headshots and didn't just pay it lip service. The way they do these suspensions is a joke, if the player had been hurt badly it would have been closer to 10 games. These sort of disgusting attacks should be starting at 10 games for unintentional non repeat offenders. Intentional or repeats should start at 20 games. These idiots need to show more respect for each other careers.

4 games seems about right for that play, especially when it is 4 of the last 5 games.

The length of the suspension is a joke and needs to be longer. A stronger message is needed if we are going to elimate cheapshots like that.
The rest of the season and the first round of the playoffs (if they got in) when have been better.
Hopefully his absense causes the Jets to lose out on a playoff spot.
