Somewhat.

I think it has a lot more to do with an expanded role for Diaz. The power play has come alive and Diaz' presence on that second power play pairing has been really, really positive IMO.

Can Schlemko and Diaz fill in just as good as Commodore and Montador did as our 7th & 8th defenseman?

Schlemy was a solid pick up for free. Especially because rumours were that Desjardins was pushing for the Canucks to put in a claim as well.

The reason why I ask is I haven't seen any sort of indication from Flames management or other sources such as 960 or elsewhere saying that this neck injury is career threatening.

I like Smid and think hes a solid contributing Flame and hope that his recovery goes well no matter what.

Edmonton could have had him. For free.

Thanks MacT -- never change Oilers...

Can't speak for anyone else, but from my point of view the problem with Smid is not his neck, it's his foot speed. He's been in decline for some time, and I'm just not sure he's up to the NHL game anymore. Great guy in the room, knows exactly what play to make defensively – but if he can't get there in time to make the play, it's not much help.

Schlemko has been more than a mild surprise. As a shut down pairing D Schlemko has been a find.
I think for what he can do and has done for the Flames he is a far better fit for the Flames than Diaz if they had to choose between the 2.
