Which isnt much better in terms of 'winning.' The Leafs are probably at least half a decade away from even a sniff of the playoffs.

True. But I think he's up for the challenge and would want to the guy to bring them back to the playoffs. Apparently he wants to be one of the all time greats.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs paid Babcock 6M. They'll pay him whatever it takes to get him.

I wonder if he has any interest in running the entire show? Coach, GM, and President. Offer 10M / year from Toronto. Although all organizations are keeping those roles separated minus old Lou in NJ.
Edmonton would be an intriguing choice. Taking over the team that's been the laughing stock of the league for the past decade. The building blocks are there, and with a McDavid / Eichel skating down the middle, finding an established goalie, and cementing the defense, Babcock could be a hero in Edmonton compared to the levels of Gretzky.

The thing is that it doesnt matter. Babcock is going to get paid wherever he goes. Hell, he could stay in Detroit and get paid. Its not that its about the money because hes going to get the money anyways.

Coming from a team that is the gold-standard of player development to Edmonton would give Babcock a stroke. Red Wings love to over-develop (for lack of a better term) their guys in the minors for a while, the whole Draisaitl debacle would've had him pulling his hair out. As long as Lowtavish is there, Scotty Bowman in his prime couldn't fix that team.

It's easy for me to spend someone else's money, but I'd throw $5m+ at Babcock in heartbeat.
Heck, he would still be worth that even if it counted against the cap!
$5m in salary buys you a guy like Jiri Hudler.
But getting a coach like Mike Babcock buys you all the Jiri Hudlers you want.
I subscribe to the notion that some coaches suck, some coaches are great, but the large majority are in the mushy middle. They get too much credit for wins, and too much blame for losses, when really they're not really the ones driving the bus.
Mike Babcock, however, is one of the great ones.
If I were the Leafs, my main personnel priority right now would be making sure I had enough guys available to shovel all the cash out of the Brinks truck that I'm driving to Mike Babcock's house on July 1st.

Serious question then, if a bit off topic. Don't you think the Flames or any other NHL head therapist would make six figures? I know the guy working for the Dino's or junior hockey team wouldn't be making much but a top pro league guy would be at the top of his profession.

The history of bringing in superstar coaches to coach crap teams to the championship is what? I'd spend my money on the ice and give the talent strong, stable and supportive off ice help. The Leafs and Oilers have neither the on or off ice resources

I do not really remember a guy like Babcock being available as a free agaent though.
He has accomplished everything there is to in the NHL. If he could win in Toronto he would go down as a legend.

Strong, stable, and supportive off-ice help, like (for example) the most respected and accomplished head coach in the world?
That sounds like a great idea.

If Babcock wants to win in a big market, could he end up in Boston or LA if they miss the playoffs?
LA is a long shot as I think they would be firing Sutter too soon.
Boston I could definitely see. Julien is good as gone if the Bruins miss the playoffs (which it's looking like there's a good chance of it happening). Would he be interested in trying to restore Boston to its former glory from 2011-2014?
Toronto I just can't see. TSN says every big name free agent or coach is going to Toronto... They even reported Stamkos going to UFA and signing in Toronto... I just don't believe Leafs rumours until they're true as these days they seem to be fabricated by the media so they can get good ratings in the biggest Canadian market.

Apparently Babcock feels a bit of pressure and an obligation to raise the bar some for coaches' salaries. I think he writes a pretty big ticket in TO - there will be a huge push there and Horachek is obviously a placeholder.
Hartley I bet is one of the lower paid guys or at best a middle of the pack guy, just because he was out of the NHL for a while.
I bet the Oil didn't even give Nelson a raise.

I see Babs in either TO or DET.
TO for obvious reasons of money and just being in TO, and DET because why not? I bet it would be pretty cool continuing The Streak for as long as possible.
I assume he's living in some fancy suburb of Detroit and probably has a nice life going on there. Why move if Detroit is willing to pony up?

I remember sometime in the past 5 years or so, it was mentioned that we have the lowest paid coach in the league (under 1M)... mentioned here via Friedman/Duhatchuk on the radio (can't remember which)... I don't think it was Brent since we took him away from NJ, so might have been Hartley since Hartley was out of the NHL for a while. I'm sure he got a nice pay raise with his new contract though.

Playfair was 2006-7, so not quite 10 years ago. But you are right, time flies.
Thing is - I don't see Keenan making the lowest, even at that point in his career, nor Sutter when he was lured from NJ.
