Different types of players.

Also, this guy was never drafted.

The best guy is probably Mike Reilly and you won't be able to sign him until June 1st, assuming he doesn't sign with the Blue Jackets and doesn't go to the Wild which is father is a minority owner.

Kenney Morrison, Western Michigan (defenseman) -- Possibly the most-coveted free-agent defenseman, Morrison came back for his junior season despite getting some NHL attention after his sophomore year. He plays a ton of minutes and has pretty good quickness to go along with a bigger frame. He's been a weapon on the power play with one of the heaviest shots in college hockey. His season is over, so he'll receive a lot of attention from NHL teams.

Justin Schultz would be fine if someone had put some effort into teaching him how to defend.

Instead he's auto-grated top-pair minutes.

He would likely be a legitimate NHL defenceman by now if he had gone to any other team.

I'm all for attempts to improve depth on the Flames blueline, even if they don't pan out.

Like I said, sounds like Justin Schultz

If Morrison goes to the Oilers, he'll be a bust.
If Morrison comes to the Flames, he's the next Brent Seabrook.

I know nothing about this guy, and have 0 opinion on his ability to make the Flames or be an impact player for us down the road. But I do know, that given he plays D, this should be pretty good. We really need to fill that D prospect funnel if we want to see this organization grow a few system players who make the big club. Not an area of strength for us at this stage of the rebuild.

His season is done.

He could either sign an NHL contract for this season and join the Flames for the rest of the season (and I believe he'd be playoff eligible), or he could sign an NHL contract that starts next season and go to Adirondack on a tryout deal.

The fact that McKenzie is reporting this probably means that a signing will be announced shortly. He doesn't seem to run with wild speculations.

Nothing? The Flames have four guys right now who would play on every NHL team (Gio/Brodie/Russell/Wideman) and a bunch of 6/7 guys who could easily be beat out.
