A longer term is better IMO so long as he stays healthy than a bigger cap hit (and if he doesn't, you have LTIR). A guy like Gio is going to be productive for a long, long time. Think for example that in 2018, even if he loses a step it would be amazing to retain Gio's on-ice contributions with a core of:
Brodie (4.65m)
Backlund (RFA this year)
Giordano (2016 is his UFA year)
Hudler (2016 is his UFA year. I dunno if he takes a pay cut, didn't he leave Detroit for a raise?)
Monahan (2016 is his RFA year)
Gaudreau (2016 is his RFA year)
Ortio (2017 is his RFA year)
Russell (2017 is his UFA year)
Wideman (2017 is his UFA year, I dunno if he bounces for money or takes a discount.)
Bennett (let's assume 2018 is his RFA year)
Poirier (let's assume 2018 is his RFA year)
...and
still have cap flexibility beyond that to keep good veterans around. And the first of those big years, 2016, we still have Raymond/Bollig/Engelland/Smid on contract.
