If your looking for a reason why Bob should be coach of the year, it goes straight to how he's handled and motivated Wideman this year.

Frankly I firmly believe at the start of the season, he had a I don't give a crap, I'm going to be traded anyways mentality. You could see it in his play.

Hartley found his motivation, and it took a benching, and reduced ice time and then an increase in responsibility and a leadership role.

Wideman is a great redemption story this year.

Yep, he is 5th in the league. And the players with more than him are PK Subban, John Tavares, Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. Drew Doughty has 4 less, so I think Wideman is doing quite well for what is asked of him.

Beaten to the punch by Killer above.

It's also the most subjective and least reliable stat

I liked Wideman before it was cool.

Always nice when a UFA signing works out and fits in perfectly with a puck moving d-corps. More Widemans please! Green is a UFA this summer, hmmm...

Me too. He is just straight up a good defenseman when used properly. He also clicks with Johnny as well as any of the forwards IMO

I was a huge Wideman hater, but I admit the guy has really impressed me this season. He's eliminated the bone-head mistakes that plagued him early in his flames tenure and has been an offensive machine. Happy to see his game flourish this season for us. Also like that he has taken on more of a leadership role with the club

I've been actually reading Spec's stuff nowadays without rolling my eyes.
I think some of that might have to do with the fact that Spector has essentially lost a lot of his voice in the Edmonton media. When Team 1260 switched to TSN 1260, Spector being a Sprotsnet affiliated guy lost his voice. He was a guest on every show, and had his own show...now he has nothing. I don't even know if he ever get's to go on 630 Ched and be heard. So unless he started being a bit more Flames friendly where the city has a Rogers owned Sports station, he has lost a lot of his media presence. Sure we see him on Oiler broadcasts, but no one is watching the Oilers anymore. At least on radio people in Edmonton who wanted to listen to Sports radio likely were tuning him in.

Like a politician needing to cross the floor to stay in office....Spector likely softened on the Flames hoping there is a chance to get some air time.

I think it has really helped Wideman to find a partner that really complements him. Russell is ultra-mobile and seems to have no trouble covering for the odd boneheaded play Wideman makes in his own zone.

It's nice to have a D corps where 4 of the 6 guys can play any amount of minutes in any role. I also think Schlemko is capable of playing more, but it makes sense that Hartley has given the extra minutes to the guys he knows better in Engelland and Diaz.

no, but it is a reasonable inference from your stated nervousness and cursing when he doesn't immediately pass to his d-partner.

Followed by the remainder of my post where I say he's had a great season and I'm glad he's around!! Infer what you like from that, Killer.
