Maybe in a Nabokov type move.

No thanks. This is Gio's team now and I'd rather cheer for the likes of Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett, etc to bring us Stanley Cup glory.
With all due respect to #12, his time as a Flame is done and it should stay that way.

Yes.
Whole lot of crazy people around here, if he and Colorado agree he will come home for next to nothing you bring him back for sure. But I also don't see the point in the Flames giving up anything to chase him right now.

Now, I was born in 89, so I'm probably wrong, but the 89 squad was probably not Lanny's team either. But my dad always tells me of how Lanny MacDonald's retirement was that much more special with the cup.

Nope. He wanted to leave cgy. Best captain we ever had but I'd like him to watch a flames run from the sofa.

Yes. Without a question.
If the Flames are contenders in a year or two, I would welcome Iggy back with open arms.

Iginla is still my favorite player of all time but the last 3-4 years here the team struggled on the ice and struggled to establish an identity. The past 2 years under Gio they established an identity as the hardest working team in hockey. The efforts are consistent, the years leading up to the rebuild they mailed in several games. Brent Sutter had that 10 minute rant about playing as a team and playing the right way.
|
Brent Sutter can rant all he wants about playing right. Bob Hartley went through some tougher times and pulled the team that went into one of the Flames' longest loosing streaks into a team that worked well together in his system. His system is more flexible than Sutter's North/South dump and chase. This is why Hartley is now coach and Sutter's not.

I think it would be great if Iginla was on the team we beat for the Stanley Cup

Big gritty power forward RW who isn't afraid to drop them plus can still easily score 20-30 goals. Put me down as a yes.
People act like if he walked in the locker room everyone would follow him around and tune out Hartley/Gio. Most of the players on this team either never played with him or played very little with him.

Lanny was a healthy scratch for a couple of games in the Finals (IIRC), so he definitely was no longer the straw that was stirring the drink back then. But unlike Iginla, it didn't involve bringing him back after he had left the team years earlier -- he was part of the team the whole time.
Don't get me wrong -- for Iggy's sake I hope he can win a Cup someday because that would be great for him and his legacy. Maybe if we win one cup we can sign him in an attempt to repeat

As others have mentioned, bringing him back as a helping piece would be nice because he can still produce offensively, but bringing him back as a leader would not be ideal.
But the thing is right now in Colorado, Iggy has taken that role and it's the kids that are leading the team.
Maybe the question is, do you want to write over the legacy of his time in Calgary or just keep it as is?

Iggy never left on bad terms though. We needed to rebuild and guys over 30 scoring 30 goals are usually a hindrance to that. We probably would have traded Gio at the time if we knew what he was capable of. Let's not kid ourselves the tank was on that year after they failed to get off to a hot start. Bob Hartley even mentioned they were looking to rebuild before he was even hired. Iggy stays and there's no Monahan/Bennett picks.

Lanny would have retired had we won the Cup in 86. He was devistated at the time in not knowing if he would ever get another chance at the Cup. Luckily for him and the Flames he did.

Yes.
This team has established an identity and he would not be called on to lead, other than by example

Yeah, a team that plays defense, blocks shots and backchecks. He wouldn't fit in at all, let alone lead by example

Iggy might get traded back here for future considerations so he can retire a Flame. I hope that happens.
But as a player? Let it go man, it's over.
