I think he meant individually, and I would I agree. As good as Giordano is, this is taking into age and contract situation.

The 2013 draft was every bit as deep as the 2015 will be, probably moreso. I don't think anyone should be surprised to see 2013 producing more full time NHLers. What it lacked, that 2015 has, was the potential for a generational talent.

But looking at past draft picks in terms of where and when they were drafted isn't that great way of looking at prospects a couple years later. Otherwise that fourth round draft pick in an unassuming 2011 draft class is worth less than a fourth in this draft class? I think I would prefer Gaudreau.

Wotherspoon, nearly 4 years after being drafted, is still with the organization and still getting a shot to show if he is capable of becoming a true NHLer. That's more than many later 2nd round picks could hope to accomplish. There's about a 25% chance that a later 2nd round draft pick will see more than a handful of games in the NHL, much less of them being impact players. For every Weber you miss out on, there's going to be 10 Stefan Meyers. Maybe the team is ready to cut ties with Wotherspoon (doubtful) but there's 0 chance they are for Klimchuk.

I assign all of our players between 0 and 10 Organization Player Value (OPV) units. You down with OPV?

Hockey has never had a prospect rating system like baseball. It would be interesting to come up with a system of 'tools' for hockey on a 20-80 scale that makes exercises like this a little less subjective. (and no, hockey video games have little relevance to real life performance, and don't consider factors like projection and decline) Trending wouldn't have a place in the discussion, as future value from present state would be the number used. (Sometimes a current to potential value is given, such as 30/50. Established players would rarely have a higher second number, resulting in a lower score, reflecting value.)

What would the hockey tools be? Skating, Shooting, Passing, Constitution, Hockey IQ?

Could we then rate Monahan (for example) 55.70.60.70.80 for a rating of 70
And then add age, position, intangibles, history of success to create a more usable and transparent indication of value

That way we can clearly see at a glance where you value Toffoli more than Monahan.
(Also, I feel that advanced stats are more valuable in identifying team strengths as opposed to individual strengths)

Perhaps there's no need to run the farm, just the roster players of both teams which would be smaller. Then we could potentially compare the points tallied.

For instance, my assumption would be that if two teams have equal points in the standings, their points totals for their roster players should be pretty close (within about 200-300 points or about 5-6 average players based on missed potential or injuries etc.)

I would run it without the picks and farm players. I'm sure you could potentially run non roster players like Setoguchi and Barts for ####s and giggles later on though.

Sure, it won't be as in depth, but we won't have to rely as heavily on someone watching all the games. We're just looking for perception I guess?

I really like the effort and thought in this, even if I do't agree with all the conclusions.
Good work.

Hard to lay claim that Giordano hasn't peaked already......

If RNH is a 5000, then Monahan has gotta be a 7000. He's at least as good offensively, is bigger, younger and plays a more complete game.

And you'd have to give at least 3 RNH's to get a Crosby.
