If Johnny Hockey wins the Calder I want Glenn Healy to present it to him.

THAT, would be priceless.

Considering the odds they were up against, the quality of teams they're on, and how they've produced,

Ekblad > Gaudreau > Forsberg would be my honest Calder ranking.

I went to the Predators stats to try and find a way to devalue FF for being on a better team, but he is their 2nd leading point getter (just one behind Ribeiro) and tied for lead in goals.

All 3 are pretty much equal IMO, but if either JG or Ekblad can lead their team to the playoffs that could be a differntiator....then again FF could get hot again and be the leading scorer on a top 3 (or even Pres Trophy) team.

I'm a huge Gaudreau fan, but I just can't put him ahead of Forsberg.

Forsberg is a beast. Talent, size and he plays a rough game. If we could have somehow managed to snag him that trade deadline...

Gaudreau - Monahan - Forsberg

Gaudreau - Monahan - Forsberg
Are you talking about the Calder race, cause that's what I'm talking about.

You bring up my point exactly too. Size. Gaudreau doesn't have that, and had everyone in the hockey world either skeptical or in full on doubt that he'd amount to anything at this level, and he's on Forsberg's heels now, with Filip slowing down. Also Nashville is in presidents trophy territory, a much more favourable situation for a young player to put up points. Those factors considered, Johnny is absolutely above Forsberg for me.

Ekblad though is on another level, given the typical amount of time it takes for defenders to develop into NHLers, let alone high end NHL defenders.

Ekblad has 2 points in his last 10 games, 3 in 13.

Klingberg has passed him for points.

Just saying. The Calder race is far from over.

In the past how much has the team's standing had an impact on the Calder winner?

Not much I think. In fact, I suspect rookies fare better on weak teams because they get more ice time.

I don't think Forsberg's size will make a difference. In fact, Johnny will get a fair number of votes because he overcomes his lack of size. Between Johnny and Forsberg I think it just comeas down to point totals. Ekblad has other considerations because of his position. However, if he ends up behind Klingberg, that may lose him some of those votes.

I think in the case of Forsberg it should be a positive impact on his chances. When you have a surprise candidate for the President's trophy and a rookie is among the team leaders in both points and +/-, that should count for something.

Comparing a forward and a defenseman is hard, but for me there is really no contest between Forsberg and Gaudreau right now.

Gaudreau will have to catch Forsberg in points to get it. 5 points back with this few games will be very tough to do even if Forsberg is slowing down a bit.

Gaudreau will have to catch fire down the stretch to get the Calder. It is possible. Either way he'll be a finalist, no doubt.

I think if he is anywhere close to points then Gaudreau's familiarity on the east coast may win it for him. Their points per games difference right now is 0.053. I think this year the points from the votes will probably be as close as it has been in a long time.

Johnny only stands a chance if he's ahead in points. Hoffman, Klingberg, and Ekblad are too impressive. If it doesn't go to the main points getter it should go to one of those three over Johnny.

Hoffman is impressive, but he is 25 and 4 years older than Johnny. It kind of puts into perspective how impressive Monahan is at 20.

I just don't sense any buzz around Hoffman or Klingberg. And that's what determines the Calder IMO.

Agree with the bolded. I still think he can do it. Looked really confident on his SO goal.

If it doesn't go to Johnny I think it will go to Ekblad or Forsberg over Hoffman and Klingberg. We will see, season's not over.
