I hate when people do this, and I hate to be that guy... but damn I wish Cammaleri had one more year on his deal with the Flames. Return this deadline would be great.

There is a reason why the market is so good for a guy like Wideman, and that is the reason why we shouldn't be dealing him, and trying to sign him to an extension (IMO). In fact, wouldn't be surprised to see him re-signed depending on how our big summer goes next year... d-man are in short supply.

And yeah wow Tampa. Picks going left right and center. Like that they moved a guy out for picks before sending some out. Nice to keep a balance.

No doubt. The prices this year are ridiculous. What would Gaborik have fetched this year?

Wideman will be 32 in a month and while I love what he's done this year it wasn't that long ago that he was a healthy scratch struggling to stay in the line up. If the offer is good take it. He's have one of his best seasons ever, you have to think about it.

No wonder the Leafs are trying to get the Phaneuf deal done, the return might actually be better now than at the draft.

Glad the Flyers best defender won't be in the lineup Tuesday!
Also glad the Flames stayed away from that price! Huge overpayment, imo.

Wideman has two years left at 5.25M. The earliest extension talks could happen would be July 1 2016. So whatever extension we would give him wouldn't kick in until he was 34...

Oh yeah, I remember last year and while I did forgive, I did not forget. But, the UFA pool this summer, next summer and for-seeable summers are not great, and the great options will probably end up getting re-signed or overpayed a ton. I think if you look at the value of new signed UFA's, they almost always end up in total flops. I could see Wideman (@ 50% retained) getting a 1st+, but that would leave us really thin and maybe even set back a rebuild... the cost is just too high unless some miracle like Wotherspoon or (Dave Who?) shows they can be a steady top 4, I can't see us replacing that.
On a side note, Garth Snow takes a lot of crap but WOW does he ever look like a genius on the Leddy/Boychuk deals....

With the cap going down next year, teams will be in a crunch and you might be able pick off a player that wasn't thought to be available because the other team doesn't have room or views them as an expendable piece, just like Leddy last year.
The prices for quality D-men are ridiculously high right now. They probably won't be as high during the offseason as teams try to compile their teams for next year. If you can sell high, you really need to do so as you can always buy for less later. The player you get in the future doesn't necessarily have to be a name guy, just like when we acquired Russell. It wouldn't hurt if you could acquire a D-prospect in the trade directly that is almost ready.

True, I've actually been speculating that myself and would love to (know it probably won't happen) pick off Tyson Barrie with an offer sheet depending on how much of a pinch they get put in. I was also hoping to get one of those D prospects from Pittsburg, but I'm sure many others have the same idea. But I'm not betting on it, nor am I on finding another dimond in the rough... until then, I think Wideman is a real important player to this team; without Wideman, I think the flood gates open (if Gio is out long term).

Crazy prices this year.
Where were these over payments when Iggy, Jbo, and Cammalleri were on the block?
I agree, that with the over payments, the Flames should be looking to get more picks for this year's deep draft.
