It's important to note that former smokers are also at risk. Tobacco smoke damages the lungs at the cellular level—damage that not always can be reversed. Also, COPD's more severe effects may not appear until later in life, accompanying the natural decline in lung function that occurs as we age. Consequently, former smokers may face declining lung function and COPD years or decades after they quit.
His presence on this earth was always a comfort to me. I remember him moving on to the Mission Impossible series right after Star Trek was cancelled. Spock references have been part of my life seemingly forever. He had a great run and never took himself seriously.
A lot of people forget that when he was first Cast in Star Trek he thought that the Spock role would kill his career and asked for heavy makeup and ears so nobody would recognize him.
Then later on he was thrilled that Spock would be given a powerful death in STWOK, but the minute that he died, Nimoy felt that he was shattered, and was happy that he was bought back. He directed 2 of the three best Star Trek films in III and IV and had a hand in saving 6.
Quote:
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
McCoy: Perhaps, we could cover a little philosophical ground. Life
[pause] McCoy: Death
[pause] McCoy: Life.
[pause] McCoy: Things of that nature. Spock: I did not have time on Vulcan to review the philosophical disciplines. McCoy: C'mon, Spock, it's me, McCoy. You really have gone where no man's gone before. Can't you tell me what it felt like? Spock: It would be impossible to discuss the subject without a common frame-of-reference. McCoy: You're joking! Spock: A joke
[pause] Spock: is a story with a humorous climax. McCoy: You mean I have to die to discuss your insights on death? Spock: Forgive me, Doctor. I am receiving a number of distress calls. McCoy: I don't doubt it.

Benefit may decrease with time, but there's significant benefit to quit at almost any age

I get a strong sense that had he not quit, we probably wouldn't have gotten a chance to see him reprise the role of Spock in 2009. So for that I'm definitely glad.

I almost shed a tear when Ronnie James Dio died, I actually did over this one.
I would religiously try and catch syndicated episodes Star Trek on CBC in the late 70's early 80's as a kid, and was absolutely fascinated by Spock. As I grew older, and started understanding the show for the incredible story telling instead of the 'cool space thingies' I became a loyal, lifelong fan.
I always viewed Spock and Kirk almost as one character. Spock was always like the little voice of reason on Kirk's shoulder guiding him to do the right thing, and Kirk was always trying to push Spock to let loose, make the illogical decision and live a little. Ying and Yang. I always viewed is as a co-command, Spock bailed Kirk out so many times, and Kirk would do idiotically irrational things, to save Spock. Probably the most iconic character duo of all time.
He certainly lived long and prospered. RIP Mr. Nimoy.

I'm glad I went to his panel at the Calgary Comic Expo in the years before it was a big thing. and was able to see and hear him in person. It was a pretty small room. He would have filled a stadium in later years.
RIP Spock. He last time I recall seeing him he looked pretty frail. Contrasting if anyone has heard or seen recent interviews with Shatner it' like the guy is still 35 in an 80 year old body.
