Any takers?

Some pretty harsh judgments in this thread. I've met Lindros on a few occasions and have had nothing but positive experiences. He takes time out for kids, makes public appearances for charity...the guy is not a monster by any means.

Just reading the article on TSN, it was definitely an antagonistic comment that Stewart made about his dad early on in his career. Especially given the media backlash about him holding out on playing for the Nordiques? I don't blame Lindros for being testy on that one.

I like your style, Reede! That's just what this stuffy company needs - a little irreverence!

I find this a little over the top for a referee.

"One year, much later in his career when he was with the Rangers, I ended up getting him on eight minor penalties that season. I caught some heat for it from John Davidson on the Rangers' broadcasts, but the truth of the matter was this: I did NOT go out of my way to 'invent' penalties on Lindros -- or any player -- but I wasn't going to give that guy a break on anything borderline that I might have let slide with a player who had gained acceptability with me.

Lindros basically grabbed my friend by the ear and slammed his head down on the bar and told us to get the #### away from him. So basically everything you heard/read about the kind of guy is was probably true.
He probably thought you guys were narcs and I've heard he doesn't like narcs.

Personally, I come from a long line of Dickheads, and I resent being lumped in with the likes of Eric Lindros.

The only thing really over the top about it is that Stewart was willing to admit to it. They all play favourites, and they all allow reputation to impact calls.

Not a surprising story. I remember years ago listening to a Flames post-game show, and Doug Barclay stating that he had had his own issues with getting Lindros to sign some sticks, and Lindros declined. It think Barclay got "big Joel Otto" ( I think were his words) to get Lindros to sign the sticks.

Barclay basically said that he didn't like Lindros, not that Barclay was always Mr. Sunshine.

Bizarre.
Well he somewhat deserved that reputation.

First off, he refused to report to the OHL club that drafted him (Sault Ste Marie), because it was "too far" from Toronto.

Then he outright tells the Quebec Nordiques he will not report to the club, since it's a small market. The Nordiques end up drafting him anyway, and a year later, trade his rights to Philadelphia, and become instant contenders.

He tells the media that if Canada fails to win the Canada Cup in 91' "the team are all failures." This is a 18 year old, coming into a tourney with the best veterans in hockey (Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Roy, Bourque, etc.), and he is the one to say anything?

Lindros was a spoiled brat, who never could stand up to his overbearing parents. Unfortunately due to the "code" of hockey, most players/staff in the NHL will remain silent if this ever comes out in court.

It's weird (no it isn't) that apparently some people didn't read the article.

I've never been a fan of Eric Lindros, but...

He's not suing the guy for telling an unflattering story about him, he's suing because he says the story isn't true, and probably the only other witness also says it isn't true. That story was shared dozens of times (I wonder if CP counts on that list) and was read by tens (or maybe hundreds of thousands of people.

I'd sue too if I couldn't get a retraction (which I assume Lindros did before dredging up this forgotten story).

On the other hand, you do kind of have to wonder about the dreaded Streisand Effect here. It is a story that I, a hockey nerd who definitely read it at the time, had completely forgotten about. I'm sure all the non-hockey-nerd people out there that happened to read it have too.

On the other, other hand, I never liked Stewart's bluster and his column always read a little too much like he was really just telling stories to say "Look at me, I was part of the club and you weren't...". So eff him too!

^ exactly, that's the crucial point here. As much as you can hate Lindros this seems like a made up story of slander he is fighting against. Funny that the article doesn't reveal the absolutely crucial turning point in the story until the very end. This should be a story of 'Stewart tells terrible story of Lindros that is not supported by the stated parties involved. Lindros wants it taken back', but it's about Lindros suing because someone blamed him of ripping posters.

That being said, I hate Lindros. Grew up in the same city as Lindros and a couple of my teachers even taught him. He was never celebrated there, which tells you all you need to know in how he was perceived by the community.

From a July 18, 2014 article.....

Flyers Equipment Manager Claims Eric Lindros was Not a Huge Jerk When He was Young

Quote:
A key person in the story was the Flyers’ equipment manager Jim “Turk” Evers. Well, Turk called in to the Preston & Steve show this morning to tell his side of the story. And his side? That it never happened at all.
We’re still waiting for audio, but according to Preston & Steve’s producer’s notes for the show, this was the gist of it:
“[Turk] Said Lindros would never do anything like this, it’s not true. Turk was named in the story as the one telling the ref that Lindros ripped up the posters. He doesn’t know why this ref would ever make these accusations. Lindros is such a great guy, goes out of his way for the fans. Turk couldn’t believe this guy wrote this stuff, he never contacted Turk about any of these supposed quotes. Lindros would never do anything like this.”
