That and a couple of players can not be re-signed because of their prospect pool and at the top is some close to NHL ready guys that can walk onto the roster next year. They want to look their best when they move to Brooklyn .

I do wonder if an RFA like Hickey could be available in the off season.

Wow i didn't think Leddy would be a core 7 year contract worthy D man.
To be fair I haven't really followed his season with the Islanders though.
Is he paired with Boychuk? Johnny is still missed by Boston.

If Leddy is making 5.5 AAV, then Boychuk must be pumped for his salary...

Yeah the back loading of the contract may be a future value of money and anticipated revenue issue that the Islanders were wanting. If they have an internal budget they likely hope to increase it with they are able to generate more money.

One thing about that Vanek trade, it forced the Islanders to go all in this year to make moves to get better, and so far they've done it.

Context is important. Leddy has played with: Toews, Kane, Kieth, Tavares, etc. Subban has played with Paccioretty, Umm....

Sure. PK has also played more minutes. But when put in the role he's in, he's giving them Subban-ish production, so it's hard to say he's not worth the 5.5M, and the guy is only 23.

She on the salary, but I'd still day your numbers are quite misleading

Islanders seems to like signing players long-term. I guess they haven't learned from the past mistakes : Yashin and DiPietro. Not saying Leddy is going to follow those two paths. I like the signing but not the term.

Do you? Here you go then.

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/show...011-14&sit=5v5

That's his numbers with and without individual Blackhawk players from 2011-2014. They're all good no matter who he's on the ice with. Similarly for this year:

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/show...014-15&sit=5v5

Summary: every skater on the Islanders performs better with Nick Leddy on the ice than without Nick Leddy on the ice. Well, there's one exception: some guy named Kael Mouillerat, who played one game this year. That's 26 / 27 skaters. That's not a coincidence.

Dude's just... good.

I was hoping the Flames would have targeted Leddy last offseason. Good for him that the Isles gave him the opportunity to show that he deserved that kind of a contract.

Can't believe the Islanders managed to get him for a couple of B level prospects.

They painted themselves into a corner where they had to be good this year. Likely removed any hesitation and doubt that they had about making moves to improve the team.

I'm glad to see them do well this year. The NHL needs teams who throw their chips in to get rewarded eventually and prove you can't just suck and draft like the Oilers. Seeing teams like the Islanders and Kings start winning after making big trades where they give up future pieces is good.

From what I've seen/heard Leddy has fit in exceptionally well with the Isles and been a big part of their turnaround. As other posters have said this contract also buys up most of his prime UFA years as well so to get that at 5.5 for seven years is not bad (assuming he doesn't completely fall apart).

If they can lock up Boychuk long term they have the makings of a very strong top four along with Hamonic and prospects like G. Reinhart and Ryan Pulock.

At 23 it seems fair. I wish we could have got Brodie for 7 years. As long as he doesn't significantly decline your good. Given his age I don't think that will happen but I guess you never know.
