You could consider monitoring your credit history regularly? I know you can get services such as Transunion or equifax, but I'm not entirely sure if you can check your credit rating regularly without subscribing to such services. If someone knows, that would be awesome.

Not quite sure if this was your original question though.

^^Pretty sure if you request a copy through good old fashioned snail mail using either service, it's free. Could probably do that quarterly, unless they have some kinda "one free annually" policy, in which case you could just switch back and forth every six months.

Not to be confused in any way with real time monitoring/protection, though, which will definitely cost you. Prior to getting my house, I was terrified everything would fall apart and I'd be another statistic. I did end up paying for some basic monitoring and protection for about 2 years through Equifax, but I'm not sure how much it was as that was 3+ years ago now.
Made me sleep better, even though in the end, (thankfully) nothing was flagged.

I subscribe to transunion and check at least monthly, but by then the damage could be done. I thought there was a way to put like a code word or something on your credit profile

Haven't heard if it would scare them, but I don't see why it would.

It just brings up a flag. I have monitoring on mine at the moment after the student loans fiasco. Getting something new might cause a few more hoops, however doing business at my current bank or other business I already deal with is still easy.

It's actually easier than it should be come to think of it. I'm not entirely sure how much security it adds. But it's something I guess.
