Meanwhile, Mike Babcock has his Red Wings 5th in the league. Pretty crazy how he hasn't won one of these and has barely been mentioned this year.

Flames will likely be shut out of all the major awards but none of that matters to me if they make the playoffs as nobody can take away what a great season it would be.

Well, Babcock is a victim of his own success. I think he tends to be held to a much higher standard.

Unfortunately (for him), if he didn't win it last year, there will probably never be a year that he'll win it. The Wings were decimated by injuries last year, he dragged what was basically an AHL team to the playoffs.

Hartley should win this in a landslide, especially if the Flames make the playoffs. Laviolette is an easier choice, Nashville sits near the top of the league. But they are a pretty good team that's underachieved the last couple seasons, primarily because Rinne wasn't at his best or was hurt. Now that Rinne is playing better, Nashville wins games.

Here's an article bemoaning that Babcock hasn't won it yet, but as an aside I always thought of it as something of a "kiss of death" for coaches. Okay so I guess I'm the porcupine at the balloon party or that's just the natural turnover of NHL coaches.

Many years ago, a noted sportswriter (I forget who, but it was one of the big names) pointed out that the Jack Adams Award could just as easily be called the ‘coach who will soon get fired’ award. Coaches tend to win the award because their teams overachieve and surprise everyone. Then they stop overachieving, and the coach gets blamed and loses his job.

Considering that, Babcock is probably rather glad that he never won the Jack Adams.

Babcock suffers from the same problem Cito Gaston did in the early 90s. The rosters were viewed as being so good that any idiot could manage them.

That may have been true four or five years ago. Have you looked at the Red Wings roster lately?

Its perception though. The Red Wings are the Red Wings because they're the Red Wings, reality be damned.

Exactly. And the Red Wings still aren't exactly the Panthers in terms of depth either.

It's funny though, because Babcock is obviously very well regarded, talented teams or not, or else he wouldn't have been given the Olympic team jobs.

True, but the Jack Adams Award is given out based on a poll of the NHL Broadcasters Association. These people are where they are because they're good at getting TV ratings, and they get good ratings because they fixate on whatever is new and shiny. Detroit was a winning franchise for a long time before Babcock got there, so he never had the luxury of being new and shiny.

Also, for the duration of their success the Wings were winning in the West.

Agreed 100%. I'd love for Hartley to win, and I think he deserves it, but those other 4 guys deserve it just as much.

Still early though. Any one of those teams (hopefully Winnipeg) could fall off.

If no Jack Adams, then at VERY least a Juno nod for best traditional/folk recording...

The Adams is a hard one to predict, and I can't help but feel that the perceived "East Coast Bias", isn't a little valid here...I don't think that Hartley gets enough press, league wide, to get the consideration he deserves...I think Trotz, who deserved it with getting play out of some talentless Nashville teams, does get it now that he is on a team that gets more press...

If those guys don't win I think it's because they didn't deserve to win not because we're a small market. There are some very deserving candidates and as it stands now I don't think any of our guys are the front runners. Gio is probably our best shot as it stands right now.

Yeah, that talentless Nashville team sure is in the dumps now that Trotz isn't coaching there, hey?

I don't think that Trotz will get the Adams for precisely that reason.
