- young
- local kid
- could potentially be our 5th best D (not that hard to be honestly)
- has size
- affordable contract although the second year makes it a riskier pickup
- we have the contract space

I personally like:
Giordano-Brodie
Russell-Wideman
Olsen-Diaz
That makes the third pairing tolerable.

Right now the only true D depth we have is Spoon and Potter. They're really the only NHL ready call-ups in case of injury. Claiming Olsen would be a good move for the Flames.
He's only got one more year after this one at a $775,000 cap hit. If the Flames let Diaz go, it'd be nice to have Olsen as a third pairing/extra D-man.

There is no way Olsen makes it to Flames spot for a claim. He's gone well before.

I think it is fair to say at this point that Diaz has been our 5th best Dman, as scary as that is

Olsen is quite solid. Decent defender in his own end, pretty good at first passes, good physicality (not overwhelming mind you), rarely makes poor decisions. He's not a perfect defenseman, but he'd be an upgrade over just about anyone on our third pairing.
I would almost say the same about Robak too.
With the Flames current depth on NHL ready defenseman, I would happily take one or both of these guys.

Diaz has like one horrible turnover a game, which usually results in a goal or a near goal.
Other than that black mark on him, I haven't minded him all that much for the past month or so. I feel like Olsen would be good on the third pairing with him.

That's a good observation. Funny how the Avs and Oilers are so similar, just one team doesn't suck as much as the other.

Diaz has the skill, but sometimes not the thinking to match it. He was definitely better than Engelland in the last game.
I still desire a Reggie type on one of the bottom pairings. I guess that was supposed to be Engelland, but Regehr could always make a decent first pass, and won almost every puck battle. Plus, just nasty.

I thought the Jets had already put Galiardi on waivers earlier this season.
Perhaps he got called back up and is now being sent down again?
Anybody know? Where are our resident Jets fans?

I don't know why, but reading this made me wonder what it would be like to have Regehr and Souray on our bottom lines as a "over the hill" old man pairing.
Assuming they're playing lower minutes on the bottom pairing, stamina and injury concerns shouldn't be as big.
Sounds sorta scary to play against actually... Oh look! A paperclip!
Overactive imagination and very off topic... sorry. Carry on.

Whatever happened to Galiardi? Good local kid, great Hitman, I was stoked when the Flames eventually landed him but he just couldnt seem to get it together.
Very underwhelming.

He was put on waivers earlier on the season. He cleared but was never sent down.
If you are on an NHL roster for 30 days or play 10 NHL games after clearing waivers you have to clear waivers again to be sent down.

This whole Olsen thing is confusing. They don't have any injured players at the moment, and they just recalled Petrovic from the minors for a 7th defenseman. They have 14 forwards and 2 goalies. There's almost no reason to put Olsen on waivers unless there is an imminent trade.
He had a pretty rough game against Detroit where he was directly responsible for two key goals in the loss, and he's had the odd bad game here and there, but it's quite surprising to see him on waivers without the need to make room on the roster.

They are on waivers because their teams think they have better options, but that doesn't mean all players on waivers are useless.
Could be they need a change of scenery to become good.
In the salary cap era the Flames have gotten a few players off waivers or traded for players who had recently cleared waivers. 2 of them, Huselius and McGrattan, did really well in their roles and were useful.
Other guys like Carson, Mikkelson, Nicholat, and MacDonald didn't really hurt the Flames in getting picked up either.

Well he gave them 1 goal after being put on waivers the first time.
26 GP, 1G, 0A, 1Pt, -4, 2 PIM.
Really looks like the end of the NHL road for TJ.

Olsen played all but one game for the Panthers this season. I wonder what's wrong with him that they would be willing to waive him?
