Not a fan of him. Besides the obvious of his salary being atrocious, he doesn't do anything great. He's got above average speed but rarely uses it. His shot is decent, but he more likely misses the net or shoots it crest. He's not physically imposing, nor great in the corners. He's a head scratcher to me. I often wonder how he ever scored 20 goals in this league.

I'll never understand the "he makes too much money" argument.
The Flames are a cap floor team.
It's not your money.
His paycheque has no negative impact on the team what-so-ever.
If we were a cap-ceiling team or cash-strapped in a small market, sure, gripe, but if you just don't like the number he's getting paid, it's really neither here nor there.
His performance is consistent when healthy, and by not being healthy all the time, he allows for rookies to get call-ups, and I'm all for that. I like him. He brings an element of size that we would miss without him, and he's basically plug-and-play anywhere in the lineup.
I expect him to be on the team through the rest of the year, possibly to be traded at the next deadline. He's not part of the future plans, but I'm in no rush to pack his bags, I think he contributes as much as Byron and certainly more than Bollig.

His salary doesn't affect the team except for the fact it greatly diminished his asset value. Given how often he is injured, his value on the market is probably in the negative when combined with his salary.
It would be interesting to know our record with or without him in the line-up. I suspect at the very least there is little difference. When a player is one of the highest paid on the team, that isn't good.

He was one of the best players last game. He has one less goal than Glencross in about 10 less games. He's the second biggest forward with any skill. I frankly think he's been effective this year, and pretty underrated. As was said above, he can play on lines 1-4.

agreed, he's always been effective when he's healthy. I have no real qualm with him. He fills a role that we need for the time being.
I'm not concerned about his salary now, if we re-signed him for similar dollars after it expires then that would be an issue.

Jones is a guy who could be a really good third line winger. So for the next couple seasons the Flames can afford a 4 million dollar guy on the third line. Still not a fan of that deal, but I can live with Jones, and his attitude fits with this group. Better than a whiney sulker like Tanguay.

I've been pretty surprised he's stayed so healthy this year.

I hope he keeps playing good. Hopefully a team is looking at him for a playoff run and we are able to trade him for something.
Lets face it, he's here to play out his contract and won't be resigned after so if a team offers anything you take it and run.

I wouldn't say he has been awesome. He's been present. Which is the minimum expectation. However, based on his past performances this is a major upgrade. He's in the game and hopefully he will begin to start contributing regularly to what has become a team that cares to win.

Let's talk about: David Jones
If so many are impressed with David Jones I can't believe the amount of flack Glencross takes. Don't get me wrong, the effort from Jones is there, which is nice, but he has very little finish. Glencross makes about 1/2 what Jones makes but has almost twice the points. I can't argue that he does appear, at times, disinterested but he is still a much better player than Jones. Sorry to derail, but I just can't believe people are signing Jones' praises while still critical of Glencross.

I like what David Jones brings. I thought the line of Jones, Monahan and Glencross was very good at times, and I hope we get to see a line of Jones, Backlund and Glencross when Glencross returns.

I don't think anyone thinks he's worth his contract, but for a guy who looked like he was a square peg for a round hole on this team, he's found a role and filled it well. He's not a long term solution, but he fills a need IMO. Ferland will eventually fill it better I think, but until then he's needed.

Is it the same people who are critical of Glencross that are praising Jones? If so, I agree, it's pretty baffling.

I don't really see a big difference between Jones this year and last year. Jones started off last year very well - offensively speaking. That is who David Jones is. He provides depth (but sporadic) offence.
What Jones does well is drive possession and makes himself a bit difficult to contain. He doesn't usually play a heavy game (though when he does, he does it well and scores more, but then gets injured). He is a decent NHL player, and doesn't have many holes in his game, but is just a grossly over-paid player when measured by his offensive numbers. Definitely don't see him as part of any problem at all on the Flames, and probably someone who will not be a Flame long-term.

I see Jones as a stopgap until Poirier/Bennett are ready to slot in the lineup.
