Suffering from "mood disorders" myself, I can say that that the problem with this advice is that if you have this stuff under control, or can get it under control, then probably you never had a notable mental health issue, almost by definition.

That said, it's still good to look into this stuff, so solid advice from that angle.

My guess is malfunctioning serotonin and or dopamine neurotransmitter regulation. Your brain overloads you with dopamine and serotonin then becomes depleted.
This is debunked science. (See for example here.)

I would recommend you not giving people advice on medication.

In fact, I would not recommend listening to medical advice given by anyone other than a specialized doctor. (And not even all of them bother to read the science, unfortunately.)

You do realize that a very substantial number of people with mental health issues are misdiagnosed, or do not know they have a mental health issue. Canada's track record on mental health issues is horrendous. We need to educate the public better, to eradicate the stigma that leads people to not seek help, or not even know they have a problem.

One big problem about this statement, is not all families will want to hear that someone in their family has mental health problems. In fact, there is such a stigma about the issue that many families will reject the member experiencing mental health issues, rather than support them and get treatment.

I've read that over 1/2 of the homeless population has mental health problems, and over 1/2 of the homeless is estranged from their immediate family. This is not a coincidence. In fact the same thing still happens when gay/lesbian youth come out to their parents. Many are rejected, and forced to leave home.
