Let me put it a different way:

If Bollig and Engellend are not holding opponents accountable, what do they add to the team? Why are they here?
Totally agree. You don't wait around to get a ruling on whether it was clean or not - if they run at your best players, you push back.

Look at Staal and Phaneuf last night - Phaneuf's hit was clean, but Staal defended his brother anyway. You HAVE to do that or teams will take liberties.

The hit didn't seem to bother Monahan in the long run because it was Regehr coming down on him when he scored.

but yeah, if Regehr can play like that he'd look good back in Flames silks.

I can understand why Bollig/Engelland didn't go after Regher after the Gio hit. That was late in the game and they also probably didn't even see the ice after.

But for the Monahan hit, i'm with Killer here, especially since Doughty just took a dumb double minor. Might as well just take an instigator and wipe out one of the powerplays, it's not like they were going to score with the PP anyways. Mind you there's always the risk that the officials call Bollig for a double minor that wipes out the Flames PP all together.

I know Bollig talked to Regher at the face off, but maybe he needs to be a little more aggressive and not give Regher the option at all.

It might have backfired. Regher is probably as tough as Bollig.

If Bollig/Engelland had taken a penalty 'holding someone accountable' for what were clean hits, and they would have gotten a penalty, and the Kings scored on the powerplay, the same people bitching and moaning now would be screaming bloody murder. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation with these two.

Personally I hate when a good clean hit results in the hitter having to fight someone other than the hittee. Take the number down and remember for later, or next game if need be.

At the start of the year against Washington, Brooks Orpik ran over Josh Jooris and without hesitation Bollig flew at Orpik and started throwing punches. Hasn't happened since. Don't know if he was told not to, or what the deal is but its noticeable. About all we can hope for from guys like Bollig & Engelland is that they use their size and weight to lean on guys and win board battles. That isn't happening much either unfortunately.
