I gave him the look of pure evil hatred. Fortunately, I'm big so I can look menacing even though a school girl could kick my ass. Didn't phase him though. Dude was in the zone.

If you are watching the game in a public place that is not a sports bar, then to me a yes!! Or a bit of a fist pump is an acceptable reaction.
Clapping and hooting and hollering by yourself, earns you a seat on the special short bus
If there is a load of folks watching the game then cheer as per the crowd

We took a cruise and they played an NFL game on the 'big screen by the pool'. It was weird, there were dozens of people watching, most giving quiet "yes!" etc when their team did well but there were a few (obviously well-lubricated) who were acting as if they were at the game in the stadium. It was weird and a bit out of place.

That's because they secretly don't care about it and only pretend to give a crap because other people are pretending to give a crap, so they overcompensate.

Sliver has a good point, know your surroundings is so true, people who are totally oblivious to their surroundings are often people like this.
I agree with Sliver, welcome to 2015 year of crazy times!

I was in a bar in Virginia for the college football playoffs. The games had a fair amount of interest and some cheering, but nothing too crazy without any local teams in it. There was a group with a 20 year old son, a forty yo mother, and the mother's friend all dressed up in Ohio State gear and got they were there an hour before game time ready for their team. When they got down 21-6, the poor son lost it, and was in tears and inconsolable. The mom had to take him home and they left. I am still wondering if she let him watch the end of the game at home or if he completely missed the big comeback!

Would seem to me that you can't "look menacing"..........
I will say that I often temper my enthusiasm for the crowd/location. the being said, it doesn't bother me if someone feels they need to hoot or holler, unless I am trying to sleep.

Count me in as agreeing with Silver.
Time and place. Not that it bugs me too much (depending on just obnoxious the guy is) but you just look like an idiot celebrating like you're the one that scored the goal (or TD) in the middle of the mall, resturant, or whatever.
But hey, I get annoyed by Mr "Yells a comment on every play" guy as if the players can hear him say "Come on Mony" fifteen freaking times a period from the nosebleeds at the saddledome or worse, a bar.

yes, lets all do what the crwod is doing and not express ourself how we want when we want.
In this case Silver, you decided to sit in the lounge where this person was watching the game. If it bothered you so much just move, honestly some peoples self righteousness knows no bounds.
He's a fan and is expressing himself/herself as a fan. Why should they have to tone it down for you or anyone?

What team was he cheering for?
UFC fans are the worst at the pub. UFC ruins everything.

Yes, you should generally conform to what the crowd is doing in most social situations and not express yourself how you want when you want. That's the whole basis of being considerate of others.
It's not different from somebody yelling into their cell phone in a restaurant. Or loudly swearing. Or talking during a movie.
Wow, guy.
