at his age its a safe deal, they have the cap space too so its a better gamble than 3-4 years longer and saving 1-2m in cap per year

It's all about a good term here. And why not throw a lot of dollars at your goalie? Most important position in my opinion.

There are few things more scarce than elite goaltenders in the NHL...it's worth paying whatever to hang on to a top 10 goalie, especially with short term.

Bob's their best player so it makes sense from that perspective. The overpayment was definitely to compensate for the shorter term.

Given how goalies can go from elite to average pretty quickly, I was quite surprised that Bob would agree to only 4 years. If his game drops or the Jackets get worse, he could become Ilya Bryzgalov in 4 years and bounce around as an experienced backup.

It's a little odd that they have just signed two players in mid season to slightly higher dollar amounts then they really are worth after how they tried to beat a young franchise center into slave labour at the start of the season.

UFA vs RFA makes a big difference.

I get that aspect, it just looks as if they went to extreme in both directions

This deal takes only 3 years off his UFA years I believe.

Great term but high dollars, but the Jackets arent up against the cap and have money to spend so they spent it to keep their team competitive.

Good deal overall for both player and team.

I thought Bob was 30. Only 26? Pretty great deal for both sides.
