All the best to him, love what he brought as a person and his mentoring of Monahan.

Sad to see it happen, but at the same time it's hardly surprising. Big Ern is the poster boy for a dying breed.
Hopefully the Flames will offer him some sort of drug/alcohol rehab counselling position once the season is up. To me he always seemed to take that side of things more seriously than hockey anyway.

I don't support fighting in the league, but I do support quality people like McGrattan in the league.
I am torn, he was really nice when I met him at hockeyville and even let me take a picture of my daughter punching him in the face.
I really hope the Flames find a way to keep him involved in the organization. We are going to have a young team and I think a person that has over come what he has can be very useful. I wonder if there is a position of player mentor.
Thanks Brian.

McGrattan guys. Get it right!
And can everybody else please make an extra effort to get his name right out of respect to the guy?

Like others have said, it had to be done.
Doesn't make me feel good however.

Aww. Kinda sad about this. Hard not to like McGrattan, but I guess this was bound to happen sometime. It makes the most sense team wise if he's not playing.

I hope some good team does pick him up and have room for him out east.

You knew it was coming as he hadn't played in some time. If he doesn't get another hockey related job after this, at least he has a backup plan.

I dont see why he would need to be waived in order to retire and get an off-ice job with the Flames and/or league.

Its in the best interests of all concerned.
But in terms of the roster, are we expecting some movement anytime soon? Because by my reckoning, Backlund came off the IR and that meant sending Granlund down. But then Jooris got put on the IR which meant Granlund was called back up. So is Jooris expected to come off the IR very soon, hence the need for an extra roster spot?

Fair enough, but you should be happy if that is the only spelling/grammar mistake in my post(s).

Maybe there is a team out there that is willing to give McGrattan one last chance to play in the NHL. If he is retiring, then what harm can be done by letting him have one more chance to play in the NHL, even if it is on some other team. If nobody claims him then he can retire, or get sent to Adirondak, or whatever the plans are.
We don't know what the teams plans are for McGrattan or what McGrattan's plans are right now. All we know is he is on waivers. Everything else to this point has been speculation.

Sorry, Carl. I've been good in this thread but I'm sure I messed it up at least once in the past.

What?
Has he said he's ready to retire? Are the Flames offering an off ice job?

I'd love to see Nashville pick him up again and take him on a nice stanley cup run. Nashville is a team that might want to get meaner for certain games or at least have a more veteran presence in the locker room.

You would have to think with his wife being pregnant he wouldn't go to Adirondack. I would guess a buy out or he wouldn't report.
