I doubt it will be down permanently, the owner is probably just taking time to evaluate what he wants to do long term.

Wow, huge loss for hockey fans. Just goes to show how much we take for granted the hard work some people pour into the Internet. Great site.

Why else would you leave an email addy on a page dedicated to say goodbye? (or am I missing the very obvious)

That sucks i loved using capgeek for contract info. It was such a unique hockey site.
Bad news indeed.

Well that would be awkward considering the message specifically asks for no purchase inquiries.

If the NHLPA was smart they would launch their own version of the website.

Yeah, the NHLPA has had the Compensation section but it's not terribly useful.

Just compensation (salary and signing bonus) for the current year, as far as I know.

Really to bad, its rare that the feel and navigation of a small website is so seemless for the average user.

That site has always been one of my top three reference points when looking at moves in my Keeper league. A players contract was really a good reference for understanding a teams commitment to a player, and what type of role he was likely to play with them going forward. As I can't watch hundreds of games/year, with different teams every night.

Screw the loss of the website...I hope the owner recovers from whatever is ailing him, that's infinitely more important.

It was a great website... I would have guessed TSN or Sportsnet would have tried to purchase it at some point... guess he really didn't want to sell. Would have to think its worth a fair bit of coin.

All the best to the guy.

Agreed - must have his reasons for not wanting to sell.
Tough hockey reference loss - one of the most revolutionary hockey resources created in recent times.

Have to think that someone will have a similar incarnation of this type of resource given its success - will be tough to match the original though.

The info from the site could be scraped via Google web archives, and someone could build a similar site.

Hopefully the guy gets through his health issues. Pretty much created what is the epitome of what useful information the Internet can provide, that wouldn't have existed 15- 20 years ago (assuming there was a cap back then of course).

Also, maybe he's already previously lined up a purchaser, in advance of his announcement?

Doubt it.. you'd want to keep the data and site up if you were buying it just so you don't lose your google rankings.

Man, that sucks.

Anyone have alternative suggestions?

I'll play around with nhlnumbers.com, but there are other sites aren't there? I seem to recall another site that I used before, but I don't remember the name.

For the fans? Cripes for the media and apparently the front office on some teams use it a lot.

Taking the site down might make the 'community' understand how much they want it, and the owner might feel he can get a better price for it then.
