I believe in the Jays.

All things considered I think the 5 and match was punishment enough.

Player was in a vulnerable position and Aulie took advantage of it. Those hits are no longer allowed in today's NHL, regardless of intent. The big open ice hit is going the way of the enforcer IMO, to the point that it won't matter much where the principal point of contact is. If someone has their head down and you take it off, you're out of the game and get a suspension.
He probably gets a game or two.

Stajan and who ever made that pass to him are most responsible. I say we were lucky to get the PP out of it. No further punishment required, good response by Bouma.

Wideman has had a couple big open ice hits this season already.
As far as Aulie's hit goes, the major, game misconduct and shame of being an Oiler is punishment enough.

If the NHL want to be consistent, then this hit should be left at the refs call on the night. Despres on Smid was a far worse hit and he got bugger all. Match penalty and a Flames 5minute PP was sufficient punishment I think. Just make sure his card is marked and rock him in our next meeting.

There will come a time when those types of hits get big suspension. It'll be similar to hitting from behind where you just can't do it no matter what the player with the puck does since you just can't have guys getting concussions these days.
That said... the league isn't there yet, so don't really expect a suspension.

@Fan960Steinberg: Keith Aulie will face a hearing for his hit on Matt Stajan last night. #Flames

Would this be over and above what they need to look at anyway since it was a game misconduct?

Pleasantly surprised. My guess is 1-2 games.

That is pretty much routine in this case, I think. Aulie got a match penalty, so he is automatically suspended until the league reviews. I doubt much comes out of it though.

Question is what took Bollig so long to go over and rough up Aulie after a team veteran was laid out with a cheap hit? Isn't keeping players honest supposed to be why Bollig is on the ice?
3) When was the last time the Flames had a big open ice hit from our blueline? I honestly can't recall.

I don't think it was intentional. His penalty last night (5 and a game misconduct) was probably sufficient enough.

Probably a phone hearing. Not a repeat offender, no injuries, so I'd say 1 game max.

6'9" Zdeno Chara hits 5'9(?)" Johnny Gaudreau. Tell me where the initial point of contact would be? Height is definitely a factor. If they don't take height into consideration, then Gaudreau would barely ever get hit and short guys would run the table in the NHL. Chara would have to drop to his knees and hipcheck Gaudreau to avoid contact with the head. Height has to be 100% a factor.

I thought the hit was fine myself. I think this is one of those ones that people are over analyzing in slow motion and not remembering how fast things happen on the ice. Stajan put his head down and Aulie simply finished what would usually be a run-of-the-mill hit IMO. Players pulling out of hits is often what makes them sloppy and dangerous, so Aulie was right for finishing it.
It actually pains me to give an Oiler the benefit of the doubt, but let's not forget that Stajan is good being on the receiving end of these at least once per season. I can't remember the last time a player that is consistently victimized like he is. The sad thing is that he usually ends up disappearing for a while afterwards.
Seriously, there should be a Hitting Matt Stajan Youtube channel (some of these are pretty similar to the hit last night).

I had no idea Aulie even played for the Oilers. I don't think its a suspendable hit. The misconduct and having to play for the Oilers is punishment enough.

I would buy a lot more of what you were saying if Stajan had position of the puck or had it. No way stepping up and derailing a defenceless player without the puck is fine. I don't blame Aulie, but he's guilty once Stajan never touches the puck

Guilty of an infraction technically, but I was fine with it from a point of whether it was malicious or even suspension worthy.
