Is he a free agent after next season? If so, would love to see Treliving extend him. He's a big part of the team moving forward and has plenty of gas left in the tank

"Quietly having a good year"?

I watch every game, Hudlers play and output has been far from quiet.

Obviously as fans, we know he isn't "quietly" putting up points, but the NHL in general doesn't really give Hudler a lot of recognition.

What he said.

Hudler, doesn't get a lot of press.

I can't recall the last time I saw a feature on him.

Aaron Vickers @AAVickers
Only eight pairs in the NHL have combined for more points than the 66 from the #Flames duo of Jiri Hudler and Johnny Gaudreau.

Voracek/Giroux(88)
Seguin/Benn-Kessel/JVR (73)
Johnson/Kucherov(71)
Stamkos/Callahan-Backstrom/Ovi(68)
Kane/Versteeg-Crosby/Hornqvist (67).

That is impressive, but is it just me or does that also seem like a lot considering how good they've been? I feel like Aaron Vickers had a thought on checking out just how the duo was looking in comparision to the leagues other good duo's and was actually expecting them to be closer to the top before looking up the info. But then after looking up the info still decided to tweet it, even though it's not necessarily tweet worthy impressive.

That all said, Hudler's value is at an all time high, and with a year left on his very reasonable deal.

I realize the leadership and intangibles and mentoring is especially helpful for this team, as well as the PPG pace he's on, but the return you'd get for him in late Jan/Feb/March, certainly if the Flames drop off a bit, may be too good to pass up for a Flames team looking 2-3 years down the road. That same deal won't be there as a late season rental in early 2016 even if he maintains things...and the Flames would likely keep him, and he'd be asking for a handsome raise as a 32 year old.

Which is fine by me, but if you want to get full trade value, this would be the year thanks to what he's shown and his contract situation.

The value he brings to this team both on the ice and as a leader for the young guys is so valuable that it would take an unreal offer for me to want him traded. Like a top prospect and a 1st round pick kind of return. Doubtful many teams would pay that much and it would depend on the pick and prospect if it was worth it. For example... I think the ducks want to make a push and could use a skilled winger like hudler but I would at least need Ritchie + 1st round pick to even consider it. Still would hesitate to do it at all. Hudler's such a perfect fit for this team.

Seriously? Read the names on that list again-- JH and JG having anything to do with those names, particularly with JG as a rookie is out of this world.

At the beginning of the season Gio was on Boomer and Rhett's show. Boomer was getting Gio to make predictions about the upcoming season. When asked about who would have the most points this season, Gio said 'Huds'. Obviously the captain see's something in the guy, mind you, Hudler did lead the team in points last year too.

I think he was disappointing in 12-13 and a bit under the radar because he was paired with Cervenka due to the language connection. Cervenka dragged him down. Interesting to see that each year he's been here he's been regarded a mentor to some player. A guy like this is exactly what's need for our young guys, and I'm glad he's getting the points as a result of his own skill too.

Other than Voracek/Giroux way out in front, Hudler and Gaudreau are pretty much keeping pace with the elite of the league. Pretty cool to see that especially when the Flames supposedly have 'no talent'.

Yes, but it's not like it's a list of "elite company" that Hudler and JG are joining, it's a list of players who have more points than them.

The tweet is essentially saying "Hudler and JG are pretty good". Yah, no ####, we know that. What would have been impressive to tweet is if JG and Hudler were actually out performing some of those guys.

Sorry, this is not a shot at Hudler and JG, but essentially that tweet is saying they are the 9th best duo in the league, i.e. just inside the top 1/3 of each teams top duos. That's pretty good, but to be honest, I would have thought they were higher. Just kind of an arbitrary meaningless stat that actually isn't that impressive when you put it into context.

I agree, the Flames clearly have a lot more talent than expected, but I'm also not blown away by them being the 9th best duo in the league. And for the record, I expect they will climb higher, maybe then it would be worth noting.

Agree completely.

But if you don't trade him this year, you don't get much for him next year/the Flames you extend him. At 32 he'll be looking at cold, hard $ and one last cash-in contract, so will want probably 3-4 years at a slight raise given how that cap's gone up since 2012.

So, truthfully, in 3 years time when he's still not half way through his next contract, is he providing the same value to the team/youngsters as he is now?
Youngsters now (such as Monahan, who will be in his 5th year then), who you'd hope, along with the more young guys (Bennett) and other positive trade/UFA additions the Flames make between now (given the salary cap they have, and growing reputation back for UFA's) and then to be come a 4 line team, will have stepped to the next level and have that leadership in them?

Not advocating anything, Hudler right now is ideal for the team as you said and I said; but in 3 years from now, is what he is doing now, as valuable as it is now, or will the Flames be at a different spot? A different spot, that is, with or without the top return they'd get from him if they were to let him go now.

Just something to think about, it sounds crazy, and even more crazy if it looks like the Flames may make the playoffs this year, but the return for him now would be (and have to be) large and that may be more beneficial long term then him still around in a few years, still as a decent player, after been given a "reward" contract he did for his help with Monahan last year and JG this year.

I would have no problem with extending Hudler for another 3-4 seasons.
