Eagerly awaiting his first interview. How could a player near the end of their career even pretend to say he's excited to go there?

The guy makes a million bucks. Are the Oilers saving up for another dressing room renovation?

Now let's see if they do the right thing and send Draisaitl back down.

@simmonssteve: Definition of desperate: Trading for Derek Roy.

@DarrenWHaynes: The #Oilers are cornering the market on players that have been put on waivers.

@SportsnetSpec: That's where the Oilers are. Trading for Roy is an upgrade.

Strange, if true. Roy's salary is only $1,000,000 per CapGeek. Arcobello's is $600,000. Is Katz starting to clamp down on the cost of their roster?

Even with the Fraser claim, they're at 47 contracts. They're obviously keeping the spots open for Heatley and Paajarvi.

Arcobello is rubbish, it's a contract in/contract out deal.

Makes sense for Edmonton.

I understand the contract situation as a factor.

But as far as waivers work, am I correct in assuming that once they claimed one of Fraser / Roy that they'd have to wait for other teams to pass on the remaining player before they could claim him too?

Seems they wanted both but thought Fraser wouldn't be available if they took Roy first, but that Roy would be available regardless?

Missing the point, 6 hours before this trade was announced, Oilers homer Stauffer was defending the Oilers not picking up Roy off waivers.

Mirtle was wrong

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
No salary retention in this EDM/NASH trade

Holy Katz.

Oil need another centre, so they get one via trade.

Except they trade a centre to get him.

Who’s running that team, anyway? It’s the mentality of a four-year-old who changes a dime for two nickels, and thinks he’s gained 10 cents.

(Only not even that good, because two nickels really are as good as a dime. Roy is older, more expensive, and has put up worse numbers this year than Arcobello. And since he’s UFA at the end of the year and Arcobello is RFA, they’re basically throwing away an asset at the end of the season. This is more like a four-year-old who changes a dime for one nickel, because nickels are bigger than dimes.)

The Oilers needed to acquire a centre to fill the slot that will be left empty when they send Draisaitl back to junior... but they traded a centre to get that centre? It would have been a passable move if not for that.

Yup I missed it. I originally thought it was from 6 minutes ago not 6 hours ago. Guess Stauffer has egg on his face now. Not that he didn't before.

Aren't there rules regarding trading a player claimed on waivers? This could be a reason to go the trade route. Even up on contracts, and the flexibility to move him at the deadline if he shows something.
