It's not exactly in Banff but more Lake Louise/Field...but Takakkaw falls is amazing (disclosure...I've only been in summer)

Its not as impressive when frozen

^^^i would advise against the drive to takakaw in the winter. Wouldn't be surprised if they closed that road till spring. It would be a white knuckle nail biter for sure.

I am pretty sure those side roads are closed in winter until Spring comes around. Field is a bit of a drive for a weekend trip to Banff anyway. There's probably enough things to do in the immediate Banff/Canmore areas.

Takakaw Falls road is closed. Moraine Lake road is closed too, I checked out both of these spots personally a few weeks back.

You can usually see a herd of elk around the railroad tracks in Banff or Canmore.

Between Canmore and Exshaw you can often find Bighorn Sheep.
Also Minnewanka Loop for bighorn sheep and elk in the woods driving through Banff springs golf course.

Maybe you can see bears in their natural habitat at the Banff town dump

in banff magpie and stump - if you like some tex-mex.......

for pure outdoor scenery, i like lake louise - also the saloon in the chateau used to serve the most awesome nachos - although they were a little more expensive than a platter would be at boston pizza.....

Highway 1A (the Bow Valley Parkway) between Banff and Lake Louise is one of the best wildlife viewing roads around.
