I wonder how showmi plays into this service decrease/price increase?

Apparently people are calling in and getting different answers. Some are being told existing customers will retain their speeds, while others are saying everyone will drop.

I just got off a chat with a rep and have a 3rd position:

Me:
As I understand it (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), prices will be going up, and speeds will be going down. Is that accurate?
Ken #7779(12:16:01)
Yes, it is true that prices will be increasing. The speed will be remaining the same. There may be information going out this morning that may be inaccurate.
Me(12:16:51)
I see, thanks for clarifying that. Do you know if the data caps will be remaining the same?
Ken #7779(12:17:18)
Yes, data will remain the same as well.
|
So he seems to think data speeds will remain the same. He also mentioned caps won't be dropping.

I have been on the fence about cutting the cords with Shaw (internet, phone, and cable) for some time now, and this might just do it. There are a couple of options for internet from independent ISPs, including TekSavvy and Distributel. Does anyone have any experience with them?
I have two barriers that I must overcome first:
- My wife feels that a landline is more "safe" than just relying on cell phones, in the event of an emergency. My argument is that our cell phones are always charged and within arms reach, 24/7...
- Hockey. Obviously there are technical ways around this that shan't be discussed here, but cable TV really is quick and easy for live sports.

TekSavvy is just a wholesale reseller of Shaw. You get a different customer service line, and the rates are slightly different, but in the end you are still using Shaw so I would expect TekSavvy rates to increase as well.

My wife is in the same boat. Essentially my home phone is just a conduit for telemarketers and a sign that we don't trust my parents to bring a charged cell phone with them when they babysit.

TekSavvy is currently $40 for "Internet 25", and Shaw is $60 (after the 6 month promo ends), and TekSavvy gives you 300 gigs as opposed to 250. And for $5 more, TekSavvy will give you unlimited usage.
That's before whatever Shaw decides to increase their price to and lower their speed to.
I'm sure that Shaw will do whatever it can to increase wholesale prices as well, but I would expect that an indie ISP will always be cheaper. The real savings however, regardless of my internet provider, would be to ditch cable and phone. But $20/month savings for essentially the same or better internet service is nothing to sneeze at.

For 50mbps teksavvy is $5 more (at current prices) and 100mbps is $55/month more (at current prices)
Certainly cheaper for the lower speeds though.

Wow - that is a substantial difference for the 100mbps package. Luckily I can get by with 25mbps, but if someone needed 100, that's a huge chunk of change.

I have no issue with the services Shaw provides though. My Internet is always up and no issues downloading or streaming. I can record up to 6 HD feeds at once on my Gateway without issues. I am not under contract and can leave whenever I want.

I've had tek savvy for years, first in Ontario where they are based and better known (they resold rogers there. I've had them in Alberta since I moved out here (even though my company pays me back for home Internet). Just never need to worry.
There customer service is weaker (smaller company, less reps etc), but I've never had to have someone come to my house and I've bought my own modems. Something that the big guys just throw in typically.

Did anyone else pick up that Canadians use the internet more than anyone in the world???
Seriously insane statement.
Also, I am locked up with these guys for a year, as my apartment only has Shaw service. Good thing it's cheap so far...

Ok, so if a person wanted high speed internet only, no cable or land line.
Lets also say this friend of mine wanted HBO online(HBOGO), Flames games, EPL along with Y&R, BB Theory, and Cougar Town for his wife. Would that be possible without shaw?

Yeah, I've had maybe 2-3 issues total with Shaw in almost 10 years. Never any significant outages, speeds stable during the evening, etc. If they'd stop jacking rates I don't think I'd ever really complain.
I don't know how stable Telus is, but the higher uplink is the most temping. My experience at my parents house was pretty good and I'd have no TV service to siphon downlink.

That's only for the first 6 months. After that you pay $93 a month (about the same as Shaw)

She's right. If you are at home, all you need to do is pick up the landline and dial 911. If nothing is said, they'll come very quickly straight to your address. If you are at home and call 911 from a cell phone and don't say anything, it'll take longer for fire/police/ems to find you.
With a landline, ANYONE can call, no one needs to actually know the address. With a cell phone, if you don't know the address, you are in a bad spot (quick, what is the actual street address of 5 of your friends...?)
You can't turn a landline off, unless you pull the plug out of the wall, which few folks think to do (even in an emergency situation, despite what the movies have you think), but turning off a cell phone (and rendering it unfindable) is incredibly easy.

HBOgo won't be available to Canadians at launch, either find a way to sign up as an American or have friend there sign up for you see if you can log in in Canada, I use my sisters ID, who lives in VA, but Had to change ISP to American for it to work.
flames games, I'm sure you'd have to use those grey market services, I'm using the rogers stuff for now - but not from Alberta, so my local team isn't blacked out.
The rest I'm sure you can get with out much work, even from the the apps of channels broadcasting them. I haven't had cable since I've been on my own, so like 6 years and really I would never consider it, too many commercials, too clunky and really not the way I'm used to consuming entertainment.
