they would certainly be part of the discussion. There would have to be compelling off ice reasons to keep them, such as:
leadership and positive influence on young players on what it means to be a pro;
Liklihood of losing them on waivers and whether there is a suitable 13th forward or 7th defenceman replacement.
For example, I don't think anyone would argue that it is better long term for Wotherspoon to be playing in the AHL right now than spending night after night in the press box like Diaz.

Ramo against Buffalo and Hiller against Pittsburgh. I wish it was the other way around, I just have more faith in Ramo than Hiller at this point and the Penguins game could get ugly quick.

I like Ferland and I think he'll be good, but right now, Granlund is better than Ferland.

Really? Hiller wasn't the reason they lost last night. Much like the Sharks loss (with Ramo in net) the difference of late has been the Flames inability to finish. I don't think it matters who starts in Pittsburgh if the Flames continue to miss the net and shoot pucks right at the goaltender as they have been doing of late. Typically when you get on a run facing goaltenders that look like they are standing on their heads it's partly because the team is doing their best at making the goaltender look good.

Too bad a lot of the kids are starting to be squeezed out though. Both Ferland and Granlund deserve to be in the lineup.

If one of them is squeezed out, the surprising sticking ability of Josh Jooris is part of the reason.

I never pinned the loss last night on Hiller. I just believe that Ramo is the better goaltender at this point of the season.

Both have had their ups and downs, right now Ramo having the ups and Hiller the downs. It was the other way around at the beginning of the season. I'm just happy we don't have to rely on one goalie to play 75/82 games of the season (Kipper).

I thought Hudler looked banged up or sick or something last night. Maybe his ribs hurt from when he got cross checked the other game and subsequently (hilariously) lost it at the ref.

Based on Hartley's usage this season..
Granlund.. 23.5 Sht/G 15:24 TOI/G
Ferland.... 19.6 Sht/G 11:20 TOI/G
Bollig....... 14.3 Sht/G 9:10 TOI/G
McGrattan 10.5 Sht/G 6:38 TOI/G
If McGrattan wasn't so bloody likeable this would be an easy decision.

I imagine Treliving is trying to flog both Bollig and Gratts. Other teams aren't dumb and will see if the Flames blink and put either one on waivers. The best targets are teams who are well back in the waiver list.

I think they'll sooner switch Granlund to wing than send him down. He'll be the last one to be demoted.

I like McGrattan, a lot, but making decisions based on who you like most isn't always the best move.
Hate to say it, but I think Big Ern's time in Calgary, and possibly the NHL, is almost up.

You're not wrong.
I just think it benefits the Flames to find a way to keep him in their locker room until the season's end. This means keeping him as the 23rd man. He fills a role. It's not an on-ice role anymore, but he's still important to the team. As far as I can tell anyway.

I think its safe to say that if Grats can't stick in Calgary, there is no place for him in the NHL.

McGrattan won't be sent to the AHL. He spends most of his time in the press box. What's the point of bringing up a younger player to take his spot?

This is a great point. And why McGrattan has been immune to roster movement so far this season. Slotting in to the 23rd spot offers very little in terms of ice time or in game development. In most cases it leads to a prospect playing less than they were before or almost not at all.

I think the plan would be to replace McGrattan with Bollig in the PB and play the call-up. Of course, then you'd probably want to even out the ice time even more between lines 3-4.

You would think Bollig would have some value. Maybe the Flames wouldn't get a 3rd for him but a 4th or 5th rounder should be doable.

Really hope it's Bollig that goes but I doubt it. Ferland and granlund have looked great and deserve to stay.

People seem to be forgetting Backlund in all of this.
What happens when he comes back? All of this talk of moving Bollig so we can play Granlund & Ferland, but when Backlund returns someone will have to go.
Truth is, without some trades Ferland & Granlund aren't likely to be on the team full time this year.
