Yeah, using regular economic principles to argue a point is so 2012. From now on only use Advanced Economics in all discussions.

I know Burke is trying to be classy, but i wish he'd validate his comments about the Oilers years ago

I believe no team should be spending right up to the cap unless they are a cup winner trying to keep the team together. I look at the Sutter years of Flames teams up against the cap as failure as if you are up against the cap and not winning even playoff series you have handcuffed yourself from getting better and have built an expensive, mediocre team.

This goes all the way back to the Oilers offer sheet for Dustin Penner when Penner played for the Ducks and Burkie was GM of Anaheim. Burke basically stated that Lowe was running the Oilers into the sewer (amongst other things) and MacT rushed to Lowe's defense with the above quote.

Pretty sure the optimal price point for maximizing revenue would be where tickets are priced just high enough so that it doesn't always sell out.

Regardless, there was no value in spending to the cap at the start of the season, just as Burke said.
There might going forward

Good article that explains the situation...

Burke told The Score that Brendan overheard him ripping Lowe in a phonecall, referring to Lowe as a “no good #######.”

Look at a team like LA and Anaheim, they're definitely contenders and are gearing up to be contenders for a while and they still have enough room to add people for a run.

Hell, Anaheim's payroll is lower than Edmonton's!

That article is so unbelievably awesome. Bettman had to step in to stop a fistfight between two NHL GMs.

Burke can carry a grudge. I love it. Only really because its against Kevin Lowe.

All I am saying is with the money they are charging for tickets they better be WILLING to spend to the cap. I didn't say just spend it for no reason

this is so great:

Burke asked Sather to act as an intermediary to set up a fist fight between him and Lowe.

So juvenile, but somehow i love it.

I never said anything about the Oilers being a good value

I'm telling you its the Kevin Lowe factor. The thought of Burke just repeatedly punching that smug jerk in his smug jerkface in some barn somewhere and then presumably leaving him for dead is inherently and intensely appealing.

At the moment I think most Oiler fans would probably cough up the rent for the barn with smiles on their faces.

Not surprising comments. Burke has always said this team had the green light to spend if they want. Hopefully a deal comes around where we can use the cap space to our advantage. Burke got a 2nd out of Sutter for taking on Primeau and Franson from Nashville for taking Lombardi

No kidding. We're only distributing 99% of available tickets instead of 100%.

Relocate to Houston!

And sorry dino7c, but supply and demand dictates ticket prices far more than anything else. To the point that anything else is largely negligable as a reason. Always has, always will.

Burke is angry and Irish. A dangerous mix on its own add some booze and he'd be invincible.

Besides, Kevin Lowe couldnt punch out a toddler without Dave Semenko holding the kid's arms down.

I've just heard it all a million times and don't care, a team with top end ticket prices should be willing to spend to the cap IF it benefits the team

If the team was having the season most were expecting the dome would 1/4 empty and people would be having trouble giving seats away.

I don't think so. Last year Calgary was 4th worst in the NHL, but the team was hard-working and highly entertaining. I personally found that edition of the Flames far more enjoyable to watch than any of the previous five years or so of the Iginla/Kiprusoff era. If Calgary was near the basement again this year but the young players were progressing nicely and the team was playing an enjoyable brand of hockey, I doubt they'd have trouble selling tickets.

I think GM's should always have the mentality of their cap floor being 3-4m less than the ceiling.

As long as the moves benefit the future and aren't "win-now" moves, I am alright with us spending a little cap.
