There's been gated communities out in Springbank for years.
Secondly, it's 22 homes. If people want to spend their money on living in a gated community on an artificial island, who cares?
If it's a precedent you're worried about, why? If you don't agree with it, don't live in a gated community. If that's your bag, then do it.

Segregation?
Im pretty sure anyone who can afford one can buy one just like ANY other house in Calgary...that argument is moot.
So now we are down to "American" city reasoning which is also just ridiculous. Gated houses exist all over Calgary and outlying areas right now...this is no more than an extension of those and putting a bunch of them behind a single gate.
Do you also oppose locked doors at apartment entrances that need a key or a code before entering? If not...what's the difference?

I'm simply dazzled by the amount of double speak around the word "gate" in that article.
"It's more of a controlled across road."
"Controlled in what manner?"
"Well it's going to have a gate at the entrance of the community"
"Oh so it's a gated community then?"
"Oh no no no, not at all. Think of it more like a fenced off road, but part of the fence opens up to allow access to residents only."
"Dude, that's a gate. You're describing a gate."
"We prefer the term, sliding fence door."

I'm curious how much more they can charge just by having the gate.

You guys realize Springbank, Bearspaw, DeWinton, etc aren't part of Calgary correct? So citing them as examples is kind of dumb.

There's a huge gated community between 17th Ave Sw and Lower Springbank Rd. Technically inside the city limits. Some ridiculous houses in there with unspoiled views.

It's pretty gauche. I can imagine the kind of people that would move in there, and I am glad there is a gated community for them so they don't end up being the neighbours of any normal people.

There's also one on Elbow between 50th and 57th Ave that borders the Country Club.

The Slopes? I used to live near there and I remember the gate opened for everyone. Though that was a few years ago so maybe my memory is wrong.

This is clearly the new headquarters for the Secret Order of Yop Gobblers for a Free Calgary. The crest on the gate will be a spilled latte, a fixie being run over by an Excursion, a group of bored stay at home moms bragging about who works the hardest to keep up wth their kids extra-cirriculars, and of course the mighty YOP.

There's place out on the edge of town sir
Risin' above the factories and the fields
Now ever since I was a child I can remember that mansion on the hill
In the day you can see the children playing
On the road that leads to those gates of hardened steel
Steel gates that completely surround sir the mansion on the hill

The entrance of a condo is basically the front door of a shared house and is accessible via a public right-of-way.

Would that position be defensible? Walking Dead (both the game and show) have had me considering various zombie apocalypse scenarios.
Iced over water in the winter months would create somewhat of a temporary land bridge for walkers, but this would be at a time that they'd likely be at their most dormant anyways, due to the frigid temperatures.
