Don't be fooled by the sweet lilt in Samantha Savage Smith's voice or the airy hooks in the Calgary-based powerhouse's songs. Yes, her new record, Fine Lines (which you can stream above exclusively on CBC Music a week prior to its release), is a buoyant bunch of pop balloons and sugary melodies, but this isn't a quick-dissolve, cotton-candy job.
The songs are teaming with intelligence and clever insights about love in all its blissful and screwed-up permutations.
i guess i found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album . kinda surprised how thoroughly i had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology .... like 3 songs before a break up and three after . so the anthropologist in me sneaked in and i decided to share them as such . first i was worried it would be too self indulgent but then i felt it might make it even more universal . and hopefully the songs could be a help , a crutch to others and prove how biological this process is : the wound and the healing of the wound . psychologically and physically . it has a stubborn clock attached to it .
Pitchfork: It sounds like an album about partnership, motherhood, and family—things that bond us—and your worst fears about them... B: [crying] I’m sorry.
Official video directed by Roger Sargent for the title track from Palma Violets' second album 'Danger In The Club' out 4th (worldwide) and 5th (US) May on Rough Trade Records.
In 2007, Sweden's The Honeydrips released their critically and commercially successful debut 'Here Comes The Future'. Really great bedroom pop (acoustic headphone music, if that makes sense), and it remains one of my favourite records. That project disbanded (it was really just a one-man venture anyway) and it seemed 'Here Comes...' was going to be a one-off venture.
Somewhat surprisingly, their sophomore record - 'In The City' - is due out tomorrow. I can't wait to hear the whole thing. First single 'Oh Stampe, Oh Stella':
