This has been mentioned previously on CP and on HNiC After Hours, but every time I think about it, it just leaves me in awe of how far Gio has come. Mark was pretty much done with professional hockey at one point and had enrolled in the Commerce program at York University. He'd been passed over in the draft three times and was ready to give up his NHL dream. And now he is unquestionably a top-5 defensmen in the game and arguably the guy who is the most valuable player in the league to his team. This guy tried to chase his dream, thought he'd failed, and still ended up becoming an elite NHLer. Makes me think he has some perspective of life that a lot of the other star players simply don't. His experience probably helps make him a better captain as well.

I always like hearing how after junior and not being drafted, he enrolled at York to take business before getting a late camp invite by the Flames. Talk about opportunity knocking.
I wonder how things would have been different if he never had the contract issues and played in Russia for that one season. He made lemonade out that situation and it really seemed to motivate him more.
I know he has been an established player for some time now, but he is such a great story so far and faced and overcame a lot of adversity.

Talented guy, warrior every nite, do anything to help his team win, humble about his achievements, quick to give credit and praise to others, strong leadership capabilities - can't believe how lucky we are to have this guy as the Flames captain.
Congrats Gio. Just keep being Gio.

Him and Brodie make it look easy on a nightly basis. A switch was flicked in his brain the second he was named captain, hasn't looked back since.
Congrats Gio.

When was the last time a Flames player was named first star of the month? Or any star of the month? I feel like it's been a real long time.

Mark Giordano named NHL first star of the month
@DarrenWHaynes: Naming of Giordano as NHL's 1st star for November comes on 5th anniversary of last #Flames player to be named a star for the month (Iginla).
@DarrenWHaynes: On Dec. 1, 2009, Jarome Iginla was named NHL's first star after he went a scorching hot 13-7-20 in 14 games to help the Flames go 10-2-2.

What an awesome story Gio's career has been thus far. Goes from never being drafted, the KHL, working his way up the roster on the Flames to eventually being the Captain of that NHL team. Replacing a Captain that gained legendary status. Gio had to emerge out of the shadow of Iginla and now he has become the best player on the Flames. He has not only become a heavy consideration for being a Norris nominee but the early favorite!
Several writers even saying he should be nominated for the Hart as well.
Man you just have to admire his work ethic and character.
Well done Gio!

I think his background story is part of why he is a great Captain. he knows how to succeed despite obstacles, expectations and difficulties. Compare Gio with the trainwreck captaincy of Phaneuf, who was annointed as a top defenceman, given top minutes right away, and handed a captaincy right when he joined the Leafs.

We were quite lucky that he didn't demand a trade (or if he did that Sutter didn't follow through) when he ended up going to the KHL that year because Sutter wouldn't give him a one way deal.
Sutter basically admitted his mistake when he gave him a one way deal that off-season.
Flames realllllllly need him to stay healthy. He's missed games in each of the past three years.

Gio is absolute lunatic and I fear for his health, but I love watching him play.
Well deserved recognition.

If the Flames win the cup, or make a decent push this year, someone ought to make a movie about Gio and his story in years to come.

Mark Giordano being the first Flame in five years to be one of the NHL's three stars of the month was interesting. But wait, there's more...
Darren Haynes@DarrenWHaynes1m1 minute ago
Since #NHL began its three monthly stars in Oct/06, Giordano is only the ninth d-man recognized and first EVER to be named the first star.

Much deserved. D-men are rarely selected for this type of acknowledgement. Gio is a beauty.
