Good move. And I agree with whomever said washrooms could all just be gender neutral. Wouldn't bother me any.

Did either of you read the article? It answers your question.
Even if you didn't, use common sense. How would a transgender-only washroom work? A whole washroom converted to cater to less than 5% of the entire student body? A sign that says "Transgender Only"? I'm sure that would be super inclusive, to have their unique situation advertised to anyone in the immediate area.
A gender-neutral facility is the same as a unisex facility. It's a washroom where everything is enclosed by stalls (including the urinals) so that everyone has privacy.
If you just would have read the article you could probably have avoided a "smart-ass" response.

I did read the article and I guess I was confused with the terminology. I wasn't sure if gender-neutral was the same as unisex. Also the statement in the article was somewhat confusing because it makes it appear as though the washroom is specifically being built for the LGBTQ students.

No need for such a smarmy response when someone is just asking a question. it would of been super easy to just answer or just ignore the post if it bothered you so much.

Where was the "smarmy"?
I was simply pointing out that the answer could be gathered from reading the article, or using common sense. I thought it was funny that CG was complaining about a "smart-ass" response when he could've just read the article in the time he was waiting for a response to suit his taste.
From the article:
Quote:
It may seem like a small gesture, but a multi-stall gender-inclusive facility can significantly reduce the risk of harassment, discrimination and stress for all parties.
|
Gender-inclusive, by nature, means all genders are included. The goal here is that if a transgendered person with a masculine appearance needs to go to the washroom, they can go into the gender-inclusive washroom without anyone saying something like "why did that guy go into the girl's washroom?" or "why is a guy in here?"
If my post bothered you, you probably could've ignored it instead of randomly jumping in, right? At least my crappy warning-worthy post DID answer the question. Purpose served!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seems nice, but is there a demand for this? Or is this just a do nothing to feel good about ourselves thing?
Legitimate question, don't mistake this for some jerk-ass, anti LGBT rights nonsense, I just wasn't aware that this was even an issue.

I think it's probably so minor that it probably isn't important, but can be summed up in your first two words: "Seems nice."
Logistically, it's better and more efficient for everyone since both genders can use it, but I can't imagine the scope of it's impact is significant.

pretty amazing that the university is more mature than the workforce.
At work I still have to punch in a code to get into the women's bathroom.

We have gender-neutral washrooms at work but I think it's mostly because the staff consists of ~35 women and 3 men.

According to my wife, that area has a lot of washrooms already/anyways, as it is next to the Macewan Hall Ballroom, and the number of washrooms is high to deal with the volumes during a concert.
Additionally, these washrooms are in need of renovations in the first place. Turning one men's washroom (which was acting as overflow anyways) into a unisex, (which continues to act as overflow), during the already planned renovations, at the request of a significant portion of the student body, is a no brainer, and really should be a non-issue. For those that want single sex washrooms, in that area there are 2 other options on that floor alone, and two more on adjacent floors.

in my building, my company leases office space from the company that owns the building - so whose responsibility is it to build a third washroom?
each floor of the building has two gender specific washrooms, it would think it would not be easy to go and build a thridwashroom?
i could also not help but wonder if those that would use the thrid washroom in university eventually become more confident as they mature and enter the workforce ad would feel comfortable just using one of the two washrooms traditionally provided?
